Did you know you can make ice cream with just two ingredients?

That’s right. All you need is condensed milk and heavy whipping cream to make a basic ice cream. You can add additional things like strawberries to make it strawberry ice cream, or melted chocolate to become chocolate ice cream.

Use your imagination.

And now that DIY anything is all the rage with people forced to stay at home, this old two-ingredient hack is back with a twist…

Extra Steps, People, Extra Steps

Here’s what you need. As we established, the basic two ingredients ice cream use are 2 cups of whipping cream and 1/2 cup of condensed milk.

The additional ingredients for DIY Magnum: a dash of vanilla essence, 350g of dark/milk chocolate.

The post by KLFoodie also uses 1 tsp of Ovalette, which is a stabiliser to make ice cream smoother. But this is actually completely optional.

In fact, by optional I mean 99% of you won’t use it since it’s not even sold in most supermarkets.

Steps:

  1. Throw everything except chocolate in a blender. Blend until soft and fluffy and doubles in size.
  2. Double boil the chocolate until it melts, then let cool to room temperature.
  3. Pour chocolate into piping bag and pipe into ice cream packets.

4. Pour ice cream mixture from step 1 into ice cream packets.

5. Throw ice cream packets into freezer for 5 to 6 hours.

6. Eat. Netflix is optional.

By now you’re probably thinking: what? How’s that even work that the ice cream mixture doesn’t mix with the chocolate?

I can do you one better by showing you this video.

And oh, this DIY Magnum “trick” is actually already viral last year.

“Magnum” Videos

This particular video recipe from Sep 2019 uses a bit of fresh milk, and the reason is probably to control the fat content.

You see, the difference between “whipping cream”, “double cream”, “heavy whipping cream”, is only in fat content. Any cream that is suitable for whipping has at least 30% fat.

In the comments section, Limau Nipis, the creator of this video admits that putting the ice cream mixture into the bag is the most challenging part.

So now you’re probably thinking: What if I don’t want to waste that much plastic?

We’re going back further in time for the tried and true method for making chocolate coatings: dip.

That’s right, here’s another video yet one more back before on how to make “Magnum” ice cream.

And the difference here is to freeze the ice cream part first, then dip them into melted chocolate and let them freeze again.
