Near S$150K in Donations Raised for 18YO GrabFood Rider Who Suffered Brain Injuries After Accident

Remember Mohammed Ali, the part-time GrabFood rider who was involved in a serious accident that left him with severe, costly injuries?

What you are about to read next can restore your faith in humanity: the public has since donated almost S$150,000 for his plight since a fundraiser was started by his family, according to TODAYonline.

The money received will be directed towards financing the 18-year-old’s medical bills, according to his father, Mr Mohammed Kamarruhadi.

Mr Kamarruhadi, who is the sole breadwinner of the family but has not been employed since January, is profoundly grateful for the public’s generous contribution. Describing himself as “speechless”, he commented that “thank you is not enough”, and is replying individually to the innumerable well-wishers as a gesture of gratitude.

Mr Mohammed Ali, who started his GrabFood job after graduating from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) to ease his family’s financial difficulties and to accumulate savings before national service (NS), was involved in an accident on April 10 that left him with multiple severe injuries.

His veins and vessels on his right hand were snapped, along with bone fractures all over his body and a brain injury that required urgent surgery.

A fundraiser was started following the accident by his brother, Mr Elfy Adriann, in a poignant and heartfelt Facebook post that has now gone viral.

Fortunately, his family have since reported that he is recovering well, having awakened from his coma and even “asked for a McDonald’s meal”. He is currently undergoing further recovery at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, including physiotherapy.

As of the time of writing, Mr Elfy Adriann’s latest Facebook post states that the family has received $148,532 in donations.

A close, amiable relationship exists between the sons and their father. As Mr Kamarruhadi explains, recollecting the difficult conversations they had following his futile job search, “We are each other’s best friends. When I couldn’t work, they told me not to worry and even promised that they would take care of me.”

It is then no wonder that he described the moment when Mr Mohammed Ali woke up as “the greatest moment of [his] life”.

Mr Kamarruhadi makes it a point to remind his son of the public’s kindness everyday. As he remarked, “Today, people are helping him. In future, I want him to help people, whoever is in need.”

To date, Mr Mohammed Ali has accrued more than $100,000 in medical bills, in addition to a cranioplasty procedure to remedy a bone injury to his skull that would cost up to $30,000.
