It’s not an exaggeration to say the ‘Ip Man‘ movies are some of my favourite movies ever.
I remember watching the first film back in 2008, gaping in awe at the action and having immense feels over the story.
Recently, on 9 December, the fourth and final entry made its debut.
You might be wondering how hyped Singaporeans got for this martial arts flick.
Let me show you the stats.
Overwhelming Fanbase
And boy, is it a lot.
On 9 December, fans knew that Donnie Yen would be visiting Our Tampines Hub to promote the movie.
What no one knew was how insane the fan reactions to him coming would be.
Our Tampines Hub was abuzz with excitement as a turnout of more than 5000 Tampines residents and hub visitors arrived to…

Our Tampines Hub is big, but I doubt anyone expected 5,000 people to show up at the mere mention of Donnie Yen’s appearance!
You can see from the pictures that some people likely couldn’t even walk.
I guess when your film is that fantastic and is the final entry, it would naturally draw fans from everywhere.
But aside from your everyday Singaporean, someone else was there to show his inner fanboy too.
Fan From Deputy PM
If you went ‘oh really?’ from reading that then you might’ve already guessed it right.
Our very own Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Heng Swee Kiat, came as a fan as well.
He even took to the Ip Man Pavillion, containing trick-eye illusions and sets from previous movies, and struck a pretty solid pose!
Went toe-to-toe with Donnie Yen when I visited the Ip Man Pavilion at Our Tampines Hub over the weekend! Had a lot of…

This scene would give anyone who watched Ip Man 2 a huge nostalgia trip.
Thank you, Sammo Hung.
But if you thought that was all, what Yen did would make any fan envious.
He personally wrote a letter to Heng and Minister for Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli, wishing them Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
To say that I am jealous of our Deputy PM is a huge understatement.
Last Hurrah
As exciting as all of this is, good things aren’t permanent.
Yen, who we’ve all associated with the movie’s titular character, announced in a Beijing press conference on 27 November that Ip Man 4 would be his final kungfu film.
Luckily for fans, he isn’t quitting showbiz yet and is simply moving to explore other titles and genres.
I totally didn’t breathe a sigh of relief.
He has not shared any other information of what these titles might be, however.
Still, after playing a character for so long, maybe it’s finally time to take a break from it.
With the finale running now and Christmas around the corner, I’ll probably get to theatres ASAP for one last send-off for this amazing series.
Even if I’ll probably watch it three times.
