50 Cents might’ve been pretty significant back in the 90s, but nowadays you’re better off using it to scrub off your scratch cards.

“It’s like… useless,” Ah Hui, our local Sarong Party Girl, said. “Things are so expensive, and a mere 50 cents? Useless.”

And while I hate to agree with her, there’s a grain of truth in her statement: nowadays, the minimum offer of payment appears to be $1, with 50-cent coins seemingly being frowned upon by select retail owners.

“How dare you,” they seem to speak with their eyebrows and fierce eyes. “How dare you.”

Oh well, too bad for them.

But gone are those days

Because according to NTUC, a 50-cent coin is no longer the butt of coined jokes. No. Rather, it’s now the very epitome of what you should have, for NTUC has announced that for the month of May…

NTUC members will get to enjoy their favourite hot coffee and tea drinks at just $0.50!

In celebration of the Labour Movement Modernization Seminar’s 50th anniversary, NTUC will be introducing the sumptuous promotion to more than 90 Foodfare and Kopitiam food courts islandwide, where NTUC members get to enjoy their favourite hot coffee and tea drinks at just $0.50 throughout the month of May.

In addition, from 1 June 2019 to 30 June 2020, NTUC members will be entitled to the same $0.50 coffee and tea offer every Wednesday. The promo will also apply to Pioneer and Merdeka generation seniors, as a gesture of appreciation for their contributions.

But wait; that’s not all

As the cost of living remains a primary concern for workers, NTUC’s social enterprises will continue to do their part to help Singaporeans. How so, you wonder. Well, according to the company, this will involve making affordable meals accessible to more.

Like the Breakfast set.

Constituting of toast, tea/coffee and a pair of soft-boiled eggs, the set’s priced at $1.80 for NTUC members and $2.20 for the public. This offer will be made available from 25 current outlets to 52 by the end of 2019.

Also, the number of Rice Garden cooked food stalls will be upped from 44 to 55 by end-2019. For those unaware about Rice Garden, it’s a social outreach programme by NTUC Foodfare that offers consumers affordably priced cooked food options, with ComCare and NTUC Foodfare Privilege cardholders entitled to mixed rice meals of one meat and two vegetable dishes at prices commencing from $1.50.

In other words, cai png lah.

Now, that’s what I call greater savings, alright.

And so… what’re you waiting for?

If you’re an NTUC member, rejoice;

For greater savings are no longer out of reach, but well within reach.

So mark down the month of May in your calendar, because as a Cheapo Old Man would probably put it:

“It’s time to play the game.”
