There aren’t many phrases that can make a Singaporean as happy as the phrase “free durians” can.
Your eyes light up, your mind fantasizes, and I’m sure your tongue is salivating at an alarming rate.
Yes, free durians are coming your way!
Only for the elderly
Only if you’re born in or before the year 1959, or you’re born in 1949 or earlier and obtained Singaporean citizenship by 1996.
Basically, if you hold one of these two cards:
Yi Liu Ji Durian announced on Facebook that they would be giving away 540kg of durians to Singapore’s elderly as part of a belated celebration of the country’s 54th National Day.
From 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday (24 Aug 2019), senior Singaporeans can receive free durians from their store at Sunshine Place.
All you have to do is present your Pioneer Generation or Merdeka Generation cards and you’ll receive one XO durian absolutely free!
Upfront Quantity
To those having traumatic flashbacks about Huawei’s botched phone giveaway, fret not.
After all, the quantity available was specified upfront (540kg).
And we know the average weight of a durian in Singapore is about 1.5 kg.
So with some quick maths, we infer that there’ll be 360 durians, give or take 50, available.
Giving back to society
On their Facebook page, the durian donors claimed this was their way of thanking senior Singaporeans for their contribution to society.
“It is our way of giving back to society and to thank the Pioneer Generation and Merdeka Generation who sacrificed and laid the groundwork for newer generations.
“We hope to ignite the spirit of philanthropy and connect the communities through our little giveaway, spreading happiness to everyone around”, they added.
Help Needed
The store is also looking for volunteers to help them with crowd and traffic control so they can avoid another Huawei disaster.
The free durians will be available while stocks last, so head down early to get yours!
