Door-to-Door Salesman Stole Bikini When Woman Didn’t Open the Door

We’ve all seen door-to-door salesmen and their main modus operandi.

But actual ones who steal lingerie as a ‘sideline’?

Well that’s virtually unheard of… until now.

Door-to-Door Salesman Stole Bikini When Woman Didn’t Open the Door

According to Channel News Asiaa door-to-door salesman has been slapped with a S$1,000 fine for an act of mischief.

His crime of passion?

Stealing a woman’s $200 bikini.

According to the news report, Joash Kuan Yao Wei, 25, was conducting sales promotions at an HDB block in Pasir Ris on 22 October 2020, at around 7:00 p.m. when he stopped at a home on the second floor.

He then proceeded to ring the bell.

While doing so, he happened to notice a black bikini perched on a bamboo pole outside the flat, and reportedly cultivated an intention to take it.

When the door did not open, he decided to follow through with the plan.

However, the victim, a 41-year-old woman, spotted the act through the peephole and opened the door, before shouting at Kuan.

The offender then hurled the bikini at a nearby staircase before going back to the victim’s residence.

She ended up calling the police.

Apart from the bikini, Kuan’s flat was also found to contain various other stolen items, including six bras and several tank tops.

Sentencing

In court, Kuan was asked about his reason behind the thefts. He replied:

“Uh, why did I steal? I stole because got the urge to.”

Kuan has since left his sales job, and is currently performing odd jobs.

The offender, who had no prior convictions, was eventually sentenced to a S$1,000 fine in court.

For theft, he could have faced a prison sentence of up to three years and a fine.

Previous Instances

Unfortunately, such cases aren’t entirely non-existent.

In fact, just last year, a serial bra thief pleaded guilty to multiple charges after more than 100 bras and 41 pairs of panties were found in his house.

39-year-old Lee Chee Kin had stolen the underwear between April 2018 and April 2020, and had even gone out during the circuit breaker without a mask to do his dirty deed.

The underwear thief would climb over back gates and enter laundry areas to take them before climbing back out.

“The accused used the stolen bras and panties for his own sexual gratification,” said Deputy Public Prosecutor Kwang Jia Min.

And in September last year, a 25-year-old Singaporean was charged on Monday (21 Sep) after he allegedly trespassed into hostel rooms at NUS to steal undergarments from female occupants.
