Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat desperately wants you to travel.
Reader: Yay! Finally!
No, not to other countries, of course; the coronavirus is still throwing parties all over the globe.
Reader: Fine. I guess I’ll have to unpack then.
How the heck did you even pack your bags so fas- never mind.
Instead of jetting off to foreign lands for a relaxing vacation, DPM Heng wants you to visit a lesser-known and much closer tourist destination: East Coast.
DPM Heng Wants You to Visit East Coast & Even Did a 4-Hour Live Video Promoting the Area
On Saturday (15 Aug), DPM Heng embarked on a trail around his constituency, East Coast, with his fellow MPs Dr Maliki Osman, Tan Kiat How, Jessica Tan Soon Neo, and Cheryl Chan.
Their journey around East Coast was broadcast live on the Facebook page East Coast Buzz.
According to East Coast Buzz, the trail was part of a series of activities to celebrate the nation’s 55th birthday.
It said that the 5 East Coast MPs aimed to discover the “vibrancy, greenery, and caring community of East Coast”, and focused on “every day” iconic places.
In the 4-hour video, the grassroots advisors/tour guides explored five different locations across their constituency, starting at Bedok Jetty and ending at Changi Village.
At the beginning of the video, after several shots of unsuspecting riders whizzing along the cycling track at East Coast Park, DPM Heng was seen having a chat with residents in the area and even gave away mysterious blue goody bags.
No one knows what these bags contained, but it must have included his famous East Coast Plan.
DPM Heng also sportingly took a selfie with residents and even rode a bicycle with his fellow MPs around the park before moving on to the next location.
Next, the group of MPs visited a Senior Citizen’s Corner near the Changi Simei RC, where they gave away more goody bags and spoke to more residents.
They also visited a community garden in Chai Chee, and helped to water some of the plants, all while practising safe distancing, of course.
Dr Osman said that the gardens are a good place for families to come together, and where children can learn about the various species of plants present.
The group then went door-to-door speaking to residents and handing out more goody bags.
The video ends with DPM Heng and his team talking and having a laugh with residents, followed by a montage of all the days’ activities.
In his post, DPM Heng said that he hopes to visit more “interesting sites” in East Coast and have more fruitful discussions with residents.
He added that his team will work with businesses and agencies to encourage local tourism in East Coast, “so that more people can discover and experience the many hidden gems in the area”.
“Together, we can create a caring, vibrant, and green East Coast for all”, he said.
