A video of a BMW driver berating his condominium security guard has since rightfully earned the ire of citizens after being reported by Shin Min Daily News.
The driver had hurled abusive insults in Mandarin at the security guard after he clamped his car wheel for allegedly parking illegally in the compound.
His infamous line, “Do you know how many units I own?” and entitled attitude remind us of another entitled Ms Phoon, aka the “Badge Lady”, who infamously asked to see the badge of a person who had asked her to wear a mask in 2021.
His actions have been rightfully criticised by the public and his fellow residents, with the abuse since prompting a response from the Union of Security Employees (USE).
The full video has just been posted online, and it shows that the man is indeed not just trying to show off his wealth: he’s also looked down on the poor.
But before that, here’s a recap.
The Incident
Previously, as reported by Shin Min Daily News, the culprit flew into a fit of rage when he failed to pick up his son from school on time due to his car’s wheel being clamped.
The incident occurred on 3 April 2023 at a condominium at Sin Ming Road. After the altercation, the culprit sent the video he shot of the security guard in the condominium residents’ group chat.
Clearly, he felt his actions were justified. However, fellow residents expressed distaste for his actions, with one sending the video to Shin Min Daily News, bringing the incident to light.
In the footage sent, he can be seen yelling at the security guard, blaming “people like him” for preventing him from picking his son up on time.
The man can also be heard accusing the security guard of making “inconveniencing people his hobby”.
Despite the security guard explaining that he had wheel-clamped the car because it was parked illegally, the man cut him off by lecturing him on the number of units he owned in the condominium compound.
Due to the heavy rain, the security guard advised the culprit to relocate to a sheltered area for their conversation. However, he continued to berate the employee, shouting insults such as, “You enjoy making life difficult for others; why don’t you just fall sick? You’re poor, so just die.”
Harsh words.
More Infuriating Details Revealed With New Video
When the video was first reported on Shin Min Daily News on 3 April 2023, the full video of the resident berating the security guard was unavailable.
However, a two-and-a-half-minute clip has since surfaced online on Stomp, featuring scenes captured by a bystander who witnessed the altercation between the resident and the security guard.
The video also includes edited clips from the culprit’s footage, who had filmed the security guard. It was revealed in the new footage that the culprit had been warned about his illegal parking before the incident occurred.
According to the security guard, the first warning was issued on 2 April 2023, a night before the altercation.
Condominiums that provide two seasonal parking lots are getting fewer, with newer condominiums in land-scarce Singapore cutting back on parking spaces.
Now, most condominiums only provide one unit.
This was probably the case for the culprit’s residential compound, as the security guard had asked the culprit if he registered his second vehicle after his tirade of owning multiple units in the compound was yelled repeatedly.
Despite the security guard’s repeated attempts to reason with him and the woman next to him, possibly his wife, trying to calm him down, the culprit persisted in his tirade.
Still believing he was right, he eventually called the police. Upon receiving the incident report at approximately 1 pm that day, the police advised the parties to resolve the situation legally, since no physical harm had been inflicted during the incident.
Abuse Against Security Workers
This is not the first time abusive actions have been made towards security guards.
Between July and September 2021, a survey was conducted by the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) on behalf of the USE. The results showed that 38.8% of officers reported experiencing workplace abuse, and more than half of the respondents stated feeling nervous or stressed while on the job.
The USE has observed that, due to the high frequency of abuse that security officers face at work, they may exhibit a range of responses. These responses can depend on various factors, such as the officer’s experience level, personal disposition, and the type of abuse encountered.
Some officers may choose to quit the industry altogether, while others may accept abuse as a part of their job as security officers.
Public Opinion and Support
Thankfully, the rest of the residents at the culprit’s condominium compound do not seem to share the same entitled attitude as him. According to the woman who leaked the video, the other residents condemned the man’s hateful attitude after he sent the video to the group chat.
“We all feel that the security guard was just doing his job. He did not need to abuse him like that verbally,” she said.
The culprit’s actions have also since been condemned by the USE in a Facebook post. The USE is a union that provides a support system to security officers.
Security guards who have been subjected to public or humiliating abuse are supported by the USE in several ways. These include giving them time off to rest, rotating them to non-public duties, and transferring them temporarily or permanently to another site.
If necessary, the union will assist officers in searching for a new job if they feel that their current workplace is abusive or too exposed to the public.
The USE has since declared that they will contact the security guard to lodge a police report against the culprit. They highlighted that since May 2022, the Private Security Industry Act amendments have introduced enhanced penalties for individuals who intentionally cause harassment, alarm or distress, assault or use criminal force or voluntarily cause hurt to security officers.
The USE also emphasised the importance of security officers and reminded people that they should never be subjected to abuse for carrying out their duties.
