A 20-year-old driver in Jiangxi province has sparked public outrage after killing a family of three in a high-speed crash and subsequently showing no remorse for his actions.
Here’s what happened.
Fatal High-Speed Collision Claims Three Lives After Driver’s Anger
On 2 Oct 2024, a man surnamed Liao from Jingdezhen in southeast China’s Jiangxi province drove 129km/h in a 40km/h zone after arguing with his girlfriend.

Despite her repeated pleas to slow down, Liao continued speeding until he struck a family of three crossing the road.
The victims—a 31-year-old father who worked at a local state-owned enterprise, his 30-year-old wife who was an accountant, and their baby son who was days away from his first birthday—were heading to a family dinner when the Tesla driven by Liao hit them.
Security footage captured the devastating crash at approximately 6:40 pm.
The infant and his mother died instantly, while the father died on the way to the hospital.
“We were waiting for them to come home for dinner, but all we got was a call from the traffic police telling us they were gone,” said Hu, who lost her son and grandson in the tragedy.
The victims’ parents have since suffered from severe depression. “It feels like the world has collapsed around us,” Hu added.
Family Demands Death Penalty as Driver’s Behaviour Causes Additional Outrage
The case has gained national attention in China not only because of the tragic deaths but also due to Liao’s behaviour after the accident. According to Hu, Liao showed no compassion at the crash scene.

“The scene was blood-soaked, yet he was chatting, joking, and laughing about my baby. Does he have any humanity?” she said.
Adding to the family’s pain, Liao’s father threatened the victims’ family when they filed a lawsuit. “My son killing your son was an act of God, you suing my son is a man-made disaster!” he reportedly told them.
Liao’s father offered 800,000 yuan (S$144,000) in compensation and suggested that his son would take care of the victims’ elderly parents after his release from prison. The family rejected this proposal.
“What use is the money when two generations of my family are gone? How could he even suggest such a thing? Why would we allow the murderer who destroyed our family to take care of us?” Hu questioned.
On 15 Apr 2025, during a four-hour trial at Jingdezhen Intermediate People’s Court in Jiangxi province, Hu publicly called for the death penalty.

“This man is only 20 years old, but he is already so cruel! One life for three lives, that is the only justice,” she stated.
Liao faces charges of endangering public safety by dangerous means. After the trial concluded, the court announced that a verdict would be delivered later.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation online, with many Chinese netizens demanding severe punishment. One commenter wrote: “This was intentional murder. He must pay with his life.”
Another said, “This is just too heartbreaking to watch. I hope this grieving mother can stay strong and see justice served, so that the ‘monster’ gets what he deserves!”
