For readers who are durian lovers, I’m sure you are always looking forwards to the months of May to July and November to January every year as these are the times of the year when durians are in season and you get to enjoy those delicious durians which are in abundant supply.

Here’s the bad news: the durian harvest this year is especially small, with one of the largest plantation in Johor, Top Fruits, declaring that their first harvest has dropped by as much as 70 percent compared to last year due to the lack of rainwater in the country.

The first harvest of durians is not going as well this time due to the lack of rainwater which has caused some durian trees to produce unripe fruits.

This has caused problems in the supply of durians from across the causeway, especially the Mao Shan Wang durians which are more vulnerable to the dry spell.

Durian sellers in Singapore has turned their sights onto Northern Malaysia for their durians. Be prepared to face less intense, less fragrant durians if you are a lover of Mao Shan Wang.

Now, on to the good news: according to Channel NewsAsia, the durian suppliers and sellers fully believe that the durian season this year will not be destroyed, but simply delayed.

They are expecting the durian season this year to start in July and end only in October. It was predicted that the next batch of durians will be ready in late July, and it promised to be a very big batch which will make up for the disappointing first batch of durians.

So readers, try your hand at a few other species of durians for a quick fix and get ready for the real deal to start in a couple of months.

Good news? We think so too! Now we can’t wait for July to come around.
