The expected arrival of the durian season this year is said to start from July and last until October, which is a month later than the usual peak season given the delay. Yes, we’re not kidding you. We’re telling you to pengkang your durian like you do to your chicken wing. No idea how or where that came about, but looking at the pictures of these “grilled” durians will get you excited already – it’s simply lit. You know how BBQ food is already hard to resist, let alone BBQ durians! Eating them “raw” is nothing compared to having these fruits “cooked. “

It enhances the taste

It enhances the taste by reducing the moisture of the fruit – think of this like making your coffee with lesser water. It will definitely taste sweeter! So if you happen to buy durians which don’t taste as good as expected – perhaps due to scams or you simply don’t know how to pick durians, you can now do something about it and make it extremely delicious.

It improves the texture

It adds a bit of texture to your durians if you cook it right. BBQ durians will taste creamier and thicker with a tinge of crisp feeling when the insides are slightly burnt.

Directions on how to BBQ them

You’d probably want to BBQ them outside your house given that the smell might stay if you do it in your house. Don’t worry, you don’t have to rent the whole BBQ pit just to try this. You can easily get portable BBQ pits at hardware stores or even supermarkets; they sell mini disposable pits that you can BBQ for a small portion of food or in this case, fruits. But of course, if you’ve rented one of those pits for a BBQ party, you have to prepare for a BBQ durian feast after that.

The process

Prepare charcoal and sit your durians on top. You may want to start off with just one or two if you’re not feeling confident on your first try, and also the portable pits are not as big for that many durians as well.

Turn the durians from time to time to ensure they’re fully cooked; you don’t want to burn one side and leave the other uncooked! BBQ until the colour changes. They’ll turn a black colour so it’s not too hard for you to tell. They will also crack open by themselves when they’re fully cooked, pretty simple and straightforward.

Continue to BBQ the durian for an extra 5 to 10 minutes after the shells pop open, this will ensure the insides are slightly burnt since durian shells are so thick. However, be careful not to overcook, because we don’t know how bad burnt durians will taste like.

Lastly, remember to eat with some utensils – a spoon or fork will suffice since they will be extremely hot. Get use to eating them this way for now!
