It seems like durian fusion foods are back in trend with the start of the durian season!
After all, who can forget about the durian hotpot craze that hit Singapore in 2019 that came all the way from Guangzhou, China where it was first popularized?
The pungent king of fruits has also been found in many other unlikely places since then, including as toppings on pizza, as a dressing in a burger and even in curry crab.
But, this is the first time someone mixed durian with fish soup and what do you know… the resulting taste might end up surprising you… in a good way.
“Wang Yuan Fish Soup” at Tampines Selling Durian Sliced Fish Soup
A stall at a coffee shop at Block 519A, Tampines Central 8 called “Wang Yuan Fish Soup” is selling this odd yet interesting combination of sliced fish soup and durian.
Discovered by a local food blogger, she shared her review of the durian fish fillet soup in a post on the Facebook group, Hawkers United-Dabao 2020 a few days ago.
She wrote that the sliced fish soup doesn’t contain any MSG – Uncle Roger would be horrified – and she personally enjoyed it a lot.
Despite being a strange combination, she said that the taste of the soup was unexpectedly pleasant.
The durian and the soup mixed together well, and that the taste of the durian wasn’t too overpowering.
Instead, the durian gave the soup some added flavour.
The red chilis and the black pepper in the soup also added some spiciness.
Apparently, the soup tasted so great, she ended up draining the entire bowl.
She ended her review by saying, “I have to say this is definitely for durian lovers though, I’m not sure how non-durian lovers will find this.”
The durian sliced fish soup came in a set along with two side dishes in addition to a bowl of rice, so she chose bitter gourd and cauliflower.
There are other options such as broccoli, carrots, cabbage, daikon and mushrooms.
On rare occasions, there are fresh oysters or organic chicken drumsticks too.
Stall Serves Only Organic Food
She pointed out that the stall owner is very health-conscious.
This is why he only uses the best organic vegetables in his dishes. The durians he uses are also organic as well.
The blogger added that if anyone’s interested to buy organic durians, they can buy the durians at this stall as well.
Costing Twice the Price of a Normal Bowl of Fish Soup
A bowl of durian sliced fish soup will set you back S$12 as opposed to the usual S$6 you’d likely pay for a normal bowl of fish fillet soup.
Despite describing the dish as being so delicious, the review of the soup drew scepticism and disgust from many netizens.
Many of them felt that durians shouldn’t be mixed with anything but there are some who expressed some interest to give the durian sliced fish soup a try.
Would you be willing to shell out S$12 to try this durian fish fillet soup?
