Two weeks ago, I watched this documentary called The Next Pandemic. It claimed that it was only a matter of time before a deadly virus evolved and started spreading like wildfire all across the world.

They said that one of the possible causes would be diseases transmitted from humans to animals. One example they gave was H1N1 and how it started in pigs.

I didn’t think much of it at the time, but just one week later, the Wuhan virus appeared.

For those who don’t know, the Wuhan virus is a coronavirus that usually affects only animals.

But it has somehow found its way to us, infected over a thousand humans worldwide, and claimed 56 lives.

But how did it start?

Theories

According to Business Insider, some believe that the Wuhan virus started in a wet market in China, just like the SARS virus in 2003.

Wet markets put people and live and dead animals – dogs, chickens, pigs, snakes, civets, and more – in constant close contact. That makes it easy for a virus to jump from animal to human.

What makes it even easier? Eating these animals of course.

Ok, so while we do agree that eating live baby mice is not a meal most of us would enjoy, we don’t know whether eating live baby mice led to the transmission of the Wuhan virus.

Either way, this video is all kinds of disgusting.

See, even our resident WTF cat has something to say about this:

The man first takes a sip of his liquour before proceeding to select a mouse. The casual manner in which he does this is a little unnerving, as if he were eating some foie gras.

These mice don’t appear to be dead because they’re moving a little, but they certainly do not look healthy. They must have been incapacitated somehow.

The man then dips one poor mouse in a sauce, and puts it in his mouth, chewing it slowly.

I’ll have to apologise to my boss because our office is currently flooded with my own vomit. 

The man then enthusiastically nods in approval after tasting the mouse, as if he were a goddamn judge on Masterchef.

That mouse was seasoned to perfection, dear contestant.

The poster captioned the post saying “I can’t believe these pictures. In this civilised society, we eat newborn mice. Scares me. Intolerable.”

The page also included images of people eating cooked bats.

Now, while I try my best not to judge, with the Wuhan virus spreading like a rumour on social media, is it really the best time to be eating live mice?

What we need now is a little prudence, a little vigilance, and zero baby mice on our dinner plates.
