We’ve been told by our parents since we were young that eating while watching TV would cause indigestion. As we grew older, TV became a privilege and we’ve resorted to another bad habit: eating while working.
So, does eating while working (or doing any other things) lead to indigestion?
Before that, let’s look at indigestion.
What’s Indigestion?
Indigestion is described as a too-full feeling in your stomach that feels uncomfortable at the same time. There might be a burning or painful feeling in the upper parts of your stomach as well.
Sometimes, indigestion appears as the sign of another, deeper, more serious issue, so if you are frequently experiencing indigestion, you need to get it checked out.
Common Symptoms of Indigestion
Some of the other common symptoms include bloating, gas, nausea, belly pain and vomiting. You also got to watch out for heartburn, which frequently comes hand-in-hand with indigestion and is not pleasant at all.
You should avoid fatty foods if you are prone to indigestion as this will make the problem worse.
Other Causes of Indigestion
Drinking alcohol and smoking causes irritation to the stomach, which will in turn trigger indigestion.
Now, let’s look at the main cause of indigestion.
Stress & Talking When Eating
Yeah, the main causes are stress and talking.
When you talk a lot while you makan, you’ll also swallow a lot of air with your food. That cause air to be consumed, so the solution is to avoid talking so much when you eat.
In addition, studies have shown that stress makes the stomach more sensitive to the acid reflux in the stomach, leading to the symptoms of indigestion.
Indigestion tends to disappear after a few hours but while it lasts, it is highly unpleasant. But you should consult a doctor if the symptoms get worse or don’t seem to go away to get the proper treatment.
So, does that mean eating at your desk won’t cause indigestion?
Eating at Your Desk is not a Direct Cause, But…
To answer the question, eating while working is not the direct cause of indigestion but it may lead to it.
This is because when you eat at your desk while working, you tend to hurry and take big bites, causing you to shallow more air. That’s akin to talking while eating. In addition, because your focus is on the work in front of you, the way you eat (i.e. hurried eating or mindless eating) would lead to more air intake as well.
Also, if you need to eat at your desk instead of having a proper meal in the coffee shop or pantry, it could only mean one thing: you’re pretty stressed. Remember how stress contribute to indigestion?
What You Should Do
Thus, while working hard and being good at your job is important, you should not neglect your health at the same time.
Take a break from work and relax during lunchtime to eat a good meal with your colleagues. Stress and fatigue are also the major factors in many dangerous diseases.
Learn to manage your stress and get a good night’s rest every day so that you will wake up feeling refreshed the next morning.
Avoid eating trigger foods such as chocolate, acidic foods, spicy foods and caffeine.
At the end of the day, leave your work stress at the office and leave to spend some quality time with your friends and family.
But of course, it’s easier said than done, eh?
