Canadian-born Hong Kong singer and actor Edison Chen, 44, confronted a flight attendant on an ANA flight from Tokyo to New York on 1 Jun 2025.

The incident occurred when a senior crew member attempted to escort a Japanese VIP passenger off the plane first after landing. The crew member asked Chen, who was retrieving his luggage, to step aside to clear the aisle.

A fellow first-class passenger witnessed the confrontation and shared an account, along with a voice recording, on Xiaohongshu. The netizen did not initially mention Chen by name, but many pointed out that the voice in the recording closely resembled the actor’s.

Flight Attendant Explains VIP Protocol as Chen Demands Explanation

Chen took offence at the request and demanded to know why he needed to move. The flight attendant explained that the other passenger was a Japanese VIP.

Chen pulled out his boarding pass and shouted in English: “Why do you want me to move for this man while I’m getting my bag? Because he’s a VIP. I’m sorry, can you read [the boarding pass] again? Tell me what that says. Well, is there something above diamond [class]?”

He continued: “What’s the difference between me and him?”

Chen then demanded a complaint letter and allegedly told the flight attendant: “I’ll make sure you lose your job!”

The first-class cabin had only eight seats, with the Japanese VIP passenger seated just one row behind Chen.

Manager Provides Different Account of Incident

Chen’s manager offered a different version of events to Dimsum Daily. According to the manager, Chen was retrieving his baggage when the passenger behind him started moving forward.

The doors had not yet opened when Chen “politely asked” if he could get his belongings first. The flight attendant then intervened, explaining that the passenger was a JMB Diamond member and received priority disembarkation.

The manager stated that the airline and Chen are currently in communication to address the situation.

Many netizens expressed support for Chen despite his outburst. One wrote: “He was grabbing his luggage and the crew asked him to move out of the way? That’s just disrespectful — anyone would be mad.”

Another questioned whether it was necessary for the Japanese passenger to insist on disembarking first, given the close seating arrangement.
