Elderly Who Fell After SBS Bus’s Sudden Brake Died After Week-Long Struggle

Unlike when we ride in a car or on a bike, there’s a feeling of safety when boarding a bus, owing to its size and sturdiness.

However, unlike other vehicles, commuters stand in buses without anything tethering them to the ground or to the poles.

This is why many of us have fallen over while standing on a bus when it comes to a sudden stop.

Sadly for one elderly man who fell over in this manner, the impact cost him his life.

68YO Man Suffered Head Injury & Punctured Lung After SBS Bus Brakes Hard

Sometime before noon on 8 Sep, SBS transit service 175 was travelling straight along North Bridge Road.

Suddenly, a car in the next lane cut into its lane and brushed against the front of the bus.

Wanting to avoid an accident, the bus driver slammed on the emergency brakes, bringing the large vehicle to an abrupt halt.

At that point, Mr Siah Keok Tiang, a 68-year-old man, had just stood up from his seat in the front row to alight.

The sudden halt threw him forward and he fell, sustaining multiple injuries in the process.

The bus driver stopped the bus immediately and called the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

Paramedics conveyed Mr Siah to Tan Tock Seng Hospital in a conscious state.

The poor 68-year-old man had suffered head injuries and multiple fractures including in his right wrist, spine, and left rib cage, which punctured his lungs.

Passed Away After Week-Long Fight

In the week following his hospitalisation, Mr Siah had drifted in and out of consciousness. He was warded in the intensive care unit as the medical staff was concerned about his punctured lung, fractured spine, and bleeding in the brain.

10 years ago, Mr Siah had suffered renal failure, which occurs when one’s kidneys lose their filtering ability. However, he had adopted a healthier lifestyle so he could see his grandchildren.

His family had used this as motivation to see his sixth grandchild, urging him to keep fighting for his life, but sadly, the 68-year-old ended up succumbing to his injuries.

He died yesterday at around 7am after his heart had stopped.

What made this worse is that the family found it difficult to visit him due to all the COVID-19 measures in place for hospital visits now.

While five people could be registered, only two could see the severely injured man at a time, and for only 30 minutes a day at that.

43YO Car Driver Arrested

The police said they’ve arrested the 43-year-old car driver for careless driving and causing grievous hurt.

Ms Tammy Tan, senior vice-president of corporate communications at SBS Transit, said the company is very sorry to hear of Mr Siah’s death and is assisting the family.

Security footage of the incident has also been shared with the police.

Investigations are ongoing.

Before his death, Mr Siah’s daughter had made an appeal on Facebook for witnesses. |

“Please help to share this post and do let me know if there is any witnesses that could share with us what has really happened. We totally have no clue what has happened and we do not know how he has fell.”
