Elderly Man in Taiwan Kills Wife in Hospital After Taking Care of Her for 30 Years

A 67-year-old man in Taiwan smothered his ailing wife to death after taking care of her for more than 30 years for various health issues.

The incident occurred on 5 Sep at around 8pm in Taipei Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.

The man, named Cai, told nurses his wife was “finally free”.

According to a United Daily News report, Cai’s wife had been bedridden and wheelchair-bound for more than 30 years after she suffered seven strokes and was unable to move independently.

More recently, the elderly man’s wife had been hospitalised for treatment after she developed urethritis (inflammation of the urethra) and ran a fever.

Since their son had to work, Cai had to take care of his wife all alone, which greatly affected his sleep.

On the night of 5 Sep, Cai heard his wife wailing in pain, and found that the IV drip had slipped out and that she was bleeding from the back of her hand.

Unable to bear seeing his wife in pain, Cai suffocated her by pinching her nose and smothering her mouth with plastic packaging used to contain tissue paper.

After pulling away, Cai released that his wife was slowly losing consciousness as her vital signs were weak.

Instead of panicking, however, he celebrated.

“My wife is finally free! My wife is dead!” he shouted as he ran to the nurses’ station while crying.

Pronounced Dead Five Days Later

Doctors tried their best to revive Cai’s wife, but she passed away five days later.

The cause of death was believed to be cerebral hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain), inflammation of the kidney, kidney abscess, and pneumonia.

On the day of the incident, the hospital contacted the police, who brought Cai back to the station for questioning.

Prosecutor Asked For Lighter Sentence

Speaking to police, Cai said his wife had a tough time in the hospital.

Nurses had difficulty drawing blood from her, causing her to suffer a great deal of pain and discomfort.

Since their son was working and the private nurse was away on leave, Cai was constantly at his wife’s side, taking care of her and even helping her change her diapers.

Towards the end, Cai simply couldn’t bear to see his wife suffer anymore.

Cai’s prosecutor has asked for a lighter sentence, citing extenuating circumstances such as Cai’s lack of sleep and the “good attitude” he exhibited after committing the crime.

It remains to be seen how severely the authorities will deal with the 67-year-old.
