A 77-year-old Esso petrol station attendant died from his injuries after being struck by a reversing car while attempting to refuel the vehicle at a Geylang station.
The incident occurred on 28 Jun 2025 at approximately 2:20am at the Esso station located at 638 Geylang Road. The elderly worker was preparing to provide refueling service when the car suddenly reversed and knocked him down.
He remained conscious after the collision and was transported to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The victim received treatment for 11 days before succumbing to his injuries on 8 Jul 2025.
P-Plate Driver Arrested in Fatal Petrol Station Accident
A 24-year-old male driver was arrested in connection with the fatal accident. The Singapore Police Force confirmed the victim’s death and stated that investigations are ongoing.
Witnesses reported that the car displayed a probationary licence plate, indicating that the driver had less than a year of driving experience. An eyewitness described the driver as appearing rushed and making a phone call at the time of the incident.
The car had pulled up to Pump Number 4 when the attendant approached to serve the customer.
Police have placed an appeal for witnesses outside the petrol station, seeking information about the “serious accident.”
Colleagues Remember Kind and Friendly Worker
The deceased had worked at the petrol station for approximately two years. The duty manager of the station’s Cheers outlet described him as friendly and enthusiastic, noting he maintained good relationships with colleagues.
A nearby worker who witnessed the incident from a distance characterised the elderly man as kind. Staff members shared that he would exchange pleasantries with coworkers at the end of each work day.
FairPrice Group, which operates the Esso station, confirmed the worker’s death through a spokesperson. The company stated they are in contact with the man’s family and are committed to providing full support and assistance during this difficult time.
