When was the last time you did something kind to give back to the community, just because you could? Especially if no one was going to applaud or recognise you for your efforts.
An elderly man has been going around Hougang and Sengkang doing just that over the past few years, and his story is truly inspirational.
Elderly S’pore Man Fixes Basketball Court’s Hoops From His Own Pocket So Others Can Play
It wasn’t just a one-off event for this elderly man. He didn’t do it just to get CIP hours. Instead, he’s been spending “many years” fixing the nets at basketball courts in Hougang and Sengkang area.
A Facebook page by the name of Coach G – Singapore thought it was high time a man by the name of “Uncle Chen” got recognised for his efforts on social media.
An entire post was written to applaud Uncle Chen for his efforts over the years. In the post, it is described that many basketballers in the Sengkang and Hougang area are familiar with him.
He also spent many years taking care of the basketball courts and even carries a ladder all the way from his house to fix the nets.
They also assert that he is not being paid for his efforts. Not forgetting the fact that Uncle Chen is “old” and climbing ladders and exerting himself in this manner may be dangerous for his health.
And he certainly didn’t do that to humblebrag online given that he might not even have a social media account.
Sells Drinks To Basketball Players To Earn A Living
So you must be wondering how on earth he can afford to support himself if he doesn’t get paid for fixing the nets.
Uncle Chen sells drinks to basketball players who play at the courts in order to earn some money.
The Facebook post also urges those who see him to support him by buying his drinks. The story is truly touching and we hope that more people will support his drinks business.
It’s a perfect example of someone who didn’t have to go above and beyond but does anyway.
