Always under the impression that used food wrappers like these…
Are utterly useless?
Well, if you’ve always felt that way, I’m here to tell you that…
A group of ladies from the NTUC Health Active Ageing Club beg to differ. Strongly.
Elderly Women at Woodlands Make Purses & Handbags Out Of Food Wrappers
On 18 May, Facebook user May Woo posted an update in public group ‘Art Don’t Throw (SG)’, detailing how she had casually popped by the office of NTUC Health Active Ageing Club and happened upon a group of ladies, who were using packaging wrappers to craft items.
Lest you can’t read, here’s a transcript:
“A few weeks ago, I popped by the office of NTUC Health Active Ageing Club on Level 6, Kampung Admiralty, Woodlands (nearest mrt station – Admiralty) to casually check out the activities offered by the Club.
I was impressed by a group of ladies who were engrossed with some craft work using packaging wrappers. They were upcycling materials (see photos & captions) to make bags, pouches, etc for a charity sale. I don’t have details of the charity sale. I was told that they need plenty of food, non-food wrappers & other packaging materials for on-going projects too.
Yesterday, I made another visit to the Club to seek approval to post their contact details & photos in Art Don’t Throw (ADT) Facebook. So happy that verbal approval was granted on the spot.
If you have some food or non-food wrappers at home (some samples in photos) and would like to contribute to their cause, kindly send by mail (at your own cost) or drop the wrappers during operation hours to:
Attn: Ms Tan BG
NTUC HEALTH ACTIVE AGEING HUB
Kampung Admiralty, 676 Woodlands Drive 71, #06-01, Singapore 730676
If you need more details, please call their office during operating hours.
Tel: 6870-8500, Mon-Fri 0830 – 1800.
Note: As of now, I’m NOT a participant nor am I a volunteer or member of the Club. I do not know much about the activities held there except for the weekly free art & craft session for making such bags.

The session is held on Wed afternoon 1400 -1700 for ‘senior citizens’ but i saw some participants probably in their early 50s in the workshop.
Hope this post is helpful to those who want to learn about this type of weaving and those who want to ‘save’ the environment and know where to send the used packaging materials to, for upcycling.”

But of course, I bet you’re wondering:
“How does the end product actually look like?”
Well, if you’re thinking about that, here’s a little teaser…
And here’s the big revelation.
Second revelation.
Third.

And so on and so forth.
Incredible stuff, really.
Netizens rave about it
Suffice it to say that Woo’s post soon went viral, with 200+ likes and reactions, as well as a respectable 191 shares (at the current time).
Netizens, too, seem to appreciate Woo’s sentiments, and they appear to be largely supportive of the ladies’ cause.
And whatever Woo did, it’s working.

Yes.
But of course, it would be ideal if the ladies over at NTUC Health Active Ageing Club get even more material to craft their masterworks, and really, that’s where you guys can help.
Chronic sweet addicts? Swallow gummy bears like you drink water?
Don’t throw those wrappers away just yet.
Instead, why not address them to the hardworking folks over at the club? Sure, it might not be much to you…
But with their expertise, it can be a real work of art.
And with that in mind, peace out.
And let’s admire that fine creation of theirs, once again.
