Singaporean actress Eleanor Lee, daughter of Mediacorp host Quan Yifeng, has responded to claims that she made derogatory comments about Chinese nationals in a viral audio recording.

The 25-year-old actress published a statement on 10 May 2025 on her Instagram page denying that it was her voice in the clip.

Audio Clip Controversy and Lee’s Response to Allegations

An anonymous person claiming to be Lee’s former assistant posted a 31-second audio recording on Chinese social media platform Weibo. The clip features a woman saying “most Chinese nationals are idiots” and that she is “doing this not for fame, but for money.”

Lee expressed shock at the recording in her Instagram statement.

“I was very shocked when I heard about the audio clip. I definitely did not speak those words,” Lee stated.

She chronicled her connection to China in her post, writing: “I returned to the country when I was 16. As I turn 26 years old this year, I have spent almost half of my life in China.”

Lee added that she gained many opportunities in China and feels only “affection and gratitude for the land.”

She explained her delayed response to the allegations, saying she and her team were “sorting out the facts” and “hoping to offer a satisfactory answer” to those who care for her.

Chinese Agency’s Statement and Impact on Lee’s Drama Project

Lee’s Chinese agency released a statement calling the audio clip “completely fake and fabricated” and saying it infringed on Lee’s legal rights.

The agency demanded that users who shared the “false information” delete their posts or face legal action.

“For those who continue to infringe on Lee’s rights and spread rumours, our company will safeguard our rights and interests through legal means,” the agency stated.

The controversy has sparked rumors about Lee’s role in the upcoming Chinese period drama The Journey Of Legend.

Online speculation suggests Lee has been removed from the cast list and that the show’s early May release has been delayed because of the controversy.

The Journey Of Legend, based on a novel by Malaysia-born author Woon Swee Oan, wrapped up filming in October 2024.

Lee plays the character Tang Fang alongside Chinese actors Cheng Yi and Gulnazar Bextiyar.

Her name still appears on one of the pinned posts dated 25 Oct 2024 on the show’s Weibo account.

However, her name is missing from another pinned post dated 9 Apr, though her scenes remain visible in the accompanying video.

According to Chinese-language daily Lianhe Zaobao, The Journey Of Legend has not announced its official premiere date, and the reported early May release was only a rumor.
