If you use Netflix frequently, you would have noticed that a certain new show has become rather popular among local users.
Yes, I’m talking about Emily in Paris, an American comedy-drama that premiered on Netflix on 2 Oct.
Even though it’s been up for just a couple of weeks, it has already climbed its way to Netflix’s Top 10 in Singapore chart, which means Singaporeans must like it, right?
Well, maybe not.
Fans of The Room, a movie which the whole world has unanimously agreed is the worst movie of all time, became a cult hit because the incompetence of the actors, writer, and director make the movie a hilarious watch.
In other words, there are sometimes shows which are so bad they’re good. And Emily in Paris appears to be one of them.
Criticism
For those who have no intention of watching the show, here’s its basic premise:
Emily in Paris follows Emily, a driven twenty-something American woman from Chicago, who moves to Paris for an unexpected job opportunity. She is tasked with bringing an American point of view to a reputable French marketing firm. Cultures clash as she adjusts to the challenges of life in a foreign city, while juggling her career, new friendships, and love life.
Viewers of the show have criticised it for its cliched representation of French culture, presenting an American impression of what it appears to be rather than what it actually is.
It’s also been accused of being shallow and unrealistic, especially in its portrayal of social media.
In spite of all these failings, it’s still, somehow, the third-most watched Netflix show in America.
And when a show becomes popular these days, memes about it are bound to pop up on the interweb.
Photoshopped in Many Places Including Tekong
Even though most short-term visitors are not allowed in Singapore, Emily managed to get to Pasir Ris from Paris last Saturday, and was spotted at various locations around the neighbourhood.
This may come as a shock to you, but these images were photoshopped.
Last Saturday (17 Oct), Singapore humour site SGAG shared Emily in Paris memes, and the rest of the internet soon followed suit.
In a meme posted by redditor u/cktnoktpls, Emily was seen standing alongside NSFs waiting for their transport at Pasir Ris Bus Interchange.
She was also seen out and about in Perlis, the smallest state in Malaysia.

Even chairman of the Singapore People’s Party, Jose Raymond, joined in the fun, sharing an image of Emily in Potong Pasir.
Emily in Paris mind be mindless, mediocre, and downright insulting, but if it’s putting a smile on people’s faces, for whatever reason, who are we to knock it?
