Hey there, remember the last time you could travel to another country? Me neither.
Curse you, COVID-19. Rest in peace, my Australia trip.
Right now, you might be thinking of a quick fix for this solution.
Maybe you’re even thinking “just drive to Malaysia only, it’s pretty easy to do right?”
After this article, you may want to think twice, then think thrice, then just don’t do it at all.
A Costly Trip
If you’re just going to go ahead without reading the rest of this, I only have one thing to say.
It was over for you.
Because starting on 1 June, Singaporeans entering Malaysia must pay for a mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine.
So on top of having a potential relaxation trip ruined, you now pay extra for having to stay there? Bo huat.
And how much is the fee?
The fee mentioned is a flat-rate across all hotels, regardless of their star rating. So if you’re a serious baller and have faith in your casino luck in getting a five-star hotel, be my guest.
Kind of a silver lining? Though not really.
Can’t even imagine a family vacation where you WANT to get quarantined all for a chance to land in a fancy hotel.
Extra Measures To Go In
Oh, and getting into Malaysia alone is already going to be a bit of a pain.
Everyone must sign an agreement letter for payment of the quarantine accommodation cost prior to entering the country. This even includes Malaysians.
And where can you get these agreements? Only at Malaysian embassies and high commissions in other countries.
So unless it’s really important, don’t even bother.
Reader Bao: But the bak kut teh in Singapore is lousy. It’s important for me to have some goody herbal BKT in JB. Can I go and don’t pay? I don’t want to have an expensive BKT like someone in Singapore.
But if for some silly reason, you want to insist on not paying, then Malaysian Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has words for you.
On 14 May 2020, he mentioned that PRs or foreigners on social visit passes in the country will have their immigration privileges revoked if they refuse to pay.
He stated that a lot of non-Malaysians married to Malaysians did not want to pay.
“Now they will have to sign the agreement first.”
Even now in their own country, Malaysia is practising controlled movement.
Ismail has said that movie, drama and advertising producers would only be allowed to resume work after Hari Raya. Even then, they might still have to wait until the end of June to do so.
So remember, unless you quarantine-cation, you probably should just take the best vacation: in your house.
