At any point in time, whether day or night, if you remove your wireless headphones, go out of your house, and listen very closely, you’ll hear a Singaporean complaining about one of three things:

  1. MRT breakdowns
  2. CPF
  3. Price hikes

Whether it’s a price hike for petrol, public transport, or electricity, we absolutely love to complain about it.

Well, now we have one more thing to grumble about.

ERP Rates to Increase by S$1 at 11 Gantries at 5 Locations on AYE & CTE

If you’re a motorist and you frequently travel along the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) and the Central Expressway (CTE), please prepare your fist for some shaking.

Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantries along these two expressways will go up by S$1 from next week, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in a news release on Monday (5 Apr).

LTA said it observed that traffic volume has built up at certain stretches on the AYE and CTE.

“Specifically, it has been observed that there appears to be a structural change in morning peak hour traffic,” it said.

“Instead of very high traffic volumes concentrated in a short window, we see heavy traffic across a longer duration, from 7:00am to 10:00am”.

To manage this traffic congestion, a hike will be implemented at 11 gantries at five locations on the AYE and CTE. ERP rates will either increase from S$0 to S$1 or from S$1 to S$2.

LTA explained that the increased congestion on these two expressways could be attributed to the progressive easing of safe management measures.

Here are the locations for the gantries affected:

  • AYE after Jurong Town Hall towards City: 3 gantries
  • Southbound CTE before Braddell Road
  • Southbound CTE after Braddell Road & PIE Slip Road into Southbound CTE: 4 gantries
  • Southbound CTE Auxiliary Lane to PIE (Changi)/Serangoon Road
  • Northbound CTE after PIE: 2 gantries

No Changes to Other ERP Gantries

The good news is that there will continue to be no ERP charges on other expressways and arterial roads. This includes roads in the central business district (CBD).

LTA said it will continue to monitor traffic speeds and congestion levels closely and assess if ERP rates need to be further adjusted as more safe management measures are relaxed.

Following the adjustment on gantries on the AYE and CTE, ERP rates will be charged at a total of 12 gantries, compared to 77 gantries pre-COVID, with the highest ERP rate of S$3 as compared to S$6 pre-COVID, LTA said.

So, it’s not that bad, really.
