An alarming incident occurred at Harbourfront Centre when the top of an escalator suddenly ruptured and protruded upward.

A woman carrying a baby was riding the escalator at that moment, creating a dangerous situation. Luckily, the escalator stopped automatically, allowing the woman and baby to safely return to the floor they were initially on.

The accident happened around 3:00 PM on Sunday, 4 May 2025, at Harbourfront Centre.

Videos and photos circulating on social media show that the faulty escalator was the upward-moving one from the second to the third floor. Three steps at the top of the escalator had deformed and bulged upward, creating a frightening scene.

When reporters visited the site at 10:40 AM on Monday (5 May 2025), they found the affected escalator still blocked off.

Three to four workers were carrying out repairs. The damaged steps had been removed and new replacement parts had been installed.

The mall management had also put up notices informing the public to use other escalators.

Witness Account

A female shop assistant working at a store next to the faulty escalator recalled the incident.

She said there was a woman on the escalator carrying what appeared to be a few-month-old baby in one arm while pushing a stroller with the other hand. The woman and baby were in the middle section of the escalator at the time.

“I suddenly heard a loud ‘boom’, and when I looked up, the steps at the very top had severely deformed. The entire escalator then stopped automatically,” said the shop assistant who wished to remain anonymous.

She added that the woman was too scared to move. Her husband was following behind and was about to step onto the escalator, but had fortunately been a step too slow.

After noticing the problem, he quickly waved at his wife, signalling her to carry the baby and walk down the escalator.

“Thankfully, the escalator stopped, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief when they saw her safely walk down. The family of three then left. I’m still shaken by this incident. If she had been closer to the top at that time, or if she had been standing right on those two faulty steps, the consequences would have been unthinkable,” the shop assistant said.
