Let’s face it, we’re a bunch of suckers for weird internet challenges.
I never could comprehend why… The dumbest things are the most entertaining. This goes beyond today’s generation of TikTokers!
Not to brag, but I was that viner kid who asked her Discipline Master out for Valentines’ Day back in secondary school.
All for the vine, it was all for the vine.
You of all people would have already heard of the Chair Challenge. If not, which rock have you been living in? We’re a month away from finishing an entire decade!
The Chair Challenge as Told by the Internet
To spare you from my incompetence at explaining the simplest of processes, here’s a clip:

According to The Mirror, the process goes as such:
Step one, you stand with both of your feet in a parallel direction against a wall. Step two, you step backwards. You do this with one foot following the back of the other.
Third step, you lean forward and position your head to rest against the wall. Finally, you slide a chair on the space between the wall and your legs.
Then you attempt to stand back up!
Now what’s even crazier about this challenge is that only women can do it!
Step aside boys, we’ve got this. Curious as to how this works? I’ve got you covered.
The Chair Challenge As Explained by Science
According to a blog post by Jeremy Johnson, a scientist from the United States, it’s all because women have a lower centre of mass as compared to men.
He explained that because of this, a woman’s centre of mass while bent over the chair is above their feet while a man’s is above the chair, making it difficult to stand upright.
But it’s not just about gravity! A professor from the University of Cambridge told The Sun that it’s the size of a woman’s foot that makes this challenge much easier to complete.
Professor Brian Ford was firm on saying that the difference in the gender’s centre of gravity had nothing to do with it.
He explained, “men have longer feet than women. Two paces back for a man would be some 60cm, for a woman it’s more like 50 cm. So to begin with, the man is forced further away from the wall.”
Well, I guess if the experts say so, it must be right!
Whatever the cause of this whole phenomenon is, I’m just glad it’s not aliens… Or witchcraft. Move along now and try it for yourselves if you haven’t.
