Everything About The Fake Gang News That The SPF is Warning the Public About

If you received some news about some Omega and Salakau gang news, you can be more relaxed now since the police have confirmed that these are fake news.

Or in my case, you can’t receive fake news if you don’t have friends to give you fake news.

Hold up, that’s a sad story in the making so let’s get back into the real news here.

Fake Messages in Circulation

The messages themselves will generally be poorly written with grammatical or spelling errors, mostly talking about a gang called OMEGA with Malay members.

The threat here is rape and beating people up if you don’t join the gang. Some messages are even telling people not to approach a group of Malays even if it might sound a bit racist.

Little gang fact: According to an article written by Kamaludeen Mohamed Nasir, OMEGA stands for Orang Melayu Enter Gangster Area, and they usually have a Greek Letter Omega Ω tattoo.

And Somehow the Gang is All Over Singapore.

Damn, who are these gangs and how do they control this many areas? SPF not the biggest gang meh?

It seems like some messages are slightly more elaborate, even having some fake pictures with wounds.

Or like that of a huge gathering of people (later revealed to be Dakir Barat, an art from the Malay peninsula involving singing in groups):

If you haven’t already known this to be fake news, you might be really suspicious of the messages or thinking about what the hell the police are doing.

If it’s really that big of a deal, what is the police doing?

Fake News, Confirmed by SPF and Other Sources

As you would expect, it’s not really a big deal because it’s not real. The fact is, none of the messages or media being circulated is hard evidence that something is going on.

Here’s a summary of what SPF said: Fake lah. Call 1800-255-0000 or go www.police.gov.sg/iwitness to report fake info.

That’s one reassurance by the biggest gang in S’pore, but there are also other people who came out to say this is fake.

Blackdotresearch, for instance, released a report detailing why they think this is fake. This is the most one-page report on the net on why it’s fake news thus far.

Someone who seems to know a little about gangs also put in their own opinion on Twitter, saying it was fake news all along:

The behaviour in the false messages seem to break gang code and didn’t seem to have paid attention to relationship dynamics and territorial boundaries between gangs.

Reminder: POFMA will catch you

You can be jailed up to 10 years, a fine of up to S$100,000 or both for spreading fake news. Here’s a summary of the bill by cnplaw.

If there was any good reason POFMA (the fake news law) was passed, this is it.

So here’s the face of PM Lee since he was the one who first said the line.
