Lest you’re not aware, there are two types of glass door.
There’s the usual glass door with no frame, which obviously looks light and therefore not as secure.

And then there’s the one with frame, usually with a metal frame that obviously is much more heavier but a lot more secure.

Usually, when there’s something wrong with a glass door, it will won’t be used. In fact, at this moment, one side of our office lobby glass door is being cordoned off due to a suspected fault.
And it’s for a good reason, if not this might happen.
Heavy Glass Door Fell on Lady in Shopping Centre
Last Sunday (24 February 2019), a lady and a man walked into the 4th storey lift lobby in Alexandra Central Mall.
After opening the door, the lady was standing about one or two metres from the door, which is closed, when the other side of the door swung close and dislodged the hinges of the closed door.
It then fell directly on the lady.
Passers-by immediately ran in for help, and it’s heartening to see the sense of urgency in the people who were focused on assisting the lady.
The lady was taken to National University Hospital, but her condition is unknown yet.

The management of the mall has confirmed the incident and is looking into the matter. When STOMP visited the mall yesterday (26 February 2019), the fallen door has been removed and the other door is blocked with an “Out of Order” sign and a warning of “DO NOT TOUCH THIS DOOR”.
The management has since offered assistance to the parities involved and engaged a contractor to check all their glass doors. They added, “The management of Alexandra Central expressed regret on this unfortunate incident and is looking into this matter seriously. However, we are unable to reveal any details concerning this case as it is currently under police investigation.”
The police are also investigating the matter.

Alexandra Central Mall
Now, if you’ve not heard of the mall before, it’s understandable: it’s one of those malls that’s not beside an MRT station, so it’s not as accessible as other popular malls.
Located just beside IKEA in Alexandra, it hasn’t been on the headlines for the right reasons: opened in late 2014, it’s one of the malls mentioned in a Straits Times article back in 2016 that featured malls that were relatively empty.
Nevertheless, if there’s anything we ought to learn from this, it’s this: always take note of your surrounding. The joke of “a door might fall on you” is no longer a laughing matter.
