Even if you don’t go to Facebook, you’d have probably heard about the Orchard Towers murder that’s shocked the nation.
After all, you don’t read about murder cases often in Singapore, and definitely not one that involved so many parties.
Here’s what has conspired so far.
What Happened?
At 6:12 a.m. on Tuesday (2 July 2019), a fight occurred between a group of people and one person in Orchard Towers.
There are a few videos of the incident, with two being captured by a smartphone after the incident and one via the mall’s CCTV. They’re rather graphic and pretty unclear, so we’re not going to embed them here.
Apparently, it shows a group of people walking and then attacking a man.
The victim is 31-year-old Mr Satheesh Noel Gobidass, who allegedly is a mechanic who’s married with a five-year-old daughter, and is a regular at the Naughty Girl Club.
Reports also stated that the victim had already been wounded in the establishment, and the group had continued their assault near the exit of the mall.
While it can’t be seen from the CCTV, someone had brought along a knife and slit the victim’s throat. After that, the group dispersed and fled the scene.
The victim was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital but succumbed to his injuries at 7:25 a.m.
But what caused the fight?
Allegedly Over a Woman
While there were speculations that it could be due to a gang dispute, Lianhe Zaobao got the scoop on another reason.
According to sources working in Orchard Towers, the brawl was triggered by a fit of jealousy involving a woman in the nightclub.
But of course, the real reason is still unknown.
Arrests Made Within the Day
By evening that day, the police had tracked down the suspects and arrested eight people: six men and two women.
And yesterday, seven of them were charged.
6 Men and 1 Woman Charged with Murder
Yesterday, six men and one woman were charged with murder.
They are all between the age of 22 to 27. Only one of them was represented by a lawyer. If convicted, they could face the death penalty.
The only woman who was charged for murder is mere 22 years old. After someone posted an image of her on Hardwarezone forums, she became an Internet sensation due to her good looks.
Mothership also reported that the lady’s name had been searched online more often.
They’ll be remanded for a week for investigations that’s required for a reconstruction of the crime scene, and would appear in court on 11 July 2019 again, followed by a three-week psychiatric observation.
The remaining woman who was arrested has yet to be charged.
