Everything About the Tuas Checkpoint Bus Accident That Occurred this Morning in 60 Sec

Early this morning (26 February 2019) at around 4:20 a.m., an accident occured at the Tuas Checkpoint when a bus collided into some railings. One woman was killed and 12 others injured.

The accident blocked the heavy vehicle lane, causing a massive traffic jam of buses, lorries coming in from Malaysia to be unable to enter the checkpoint into Singapore.

The Immigrations Checkpoints Authority (ICA) responded by closing the lane and directing these vehicles back into Malaysia.

Motorists were advised to used the Woodlands checkpoint instead.

The Tuas Checkpoint’s heavy vehicle was only reopened at 10:00 a.m.

What Happened

One person, a 35-year-old woman, was killed and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Initially, 16 people were reported injured. That number was later revised to 12, including the bus driver. Four passengers sustained minor injuries and declined to be taken to the hospital.

The SCDF responded to a call for assistance at about 4:25 a.m. Arriving on the scene at Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim, they saw the bus against the railings at the side of the flyover. Two women were found at the foot of the flyover, one dead, the other seriously injured.

The 11 injured passengers and the bus driver were taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and National University Hospital.

Some employees from the company HP were confirmed to be on that vehicle.

By 7:00 a.m., the ICA reported that the traffic for cars and motorcycles had returned to normal while the heavy vehicle lane remained closed. Arrival traffic was heavy as it usually is during the morning peak period.

As mentioned, by 10:00 a.m., the heavy vehicles lane had reopened.

Police investigations are currently ongoing.

This is not the first time accidents have occured at the Singapore-Malaysia checkpoints.

30 June 2018 

On June 30 2018, two were killed and three were  injured in an accident at the Causeway involving a lorry, a trailer and three motorcycles. The 30-year-old trailer driver was arrested for suspected drink driving while the 23-year-old lorry driver was arrested for allegedly causing death by a rash act.

1 July 2018

On 1 July last year, an accident involving four cars occurred at the Woodlands Checkpoint early in the morning. Two male drivers, aged 32 and 51 respectively, were taken to Khoo Teck Puat hospital for treatment.

Photos circulating online of the accident showed the badly damaged vehicles sprawled across the two lanes.

The accident caused major traffic delays.

8 October 2018

On 8 October 2018, at 5:30am at the Woodlands Crossing, a 35-year-old motorcyclist skidded and hit a barricade at the Woodlands Checkpoint. This caused two other motorcycles to collide into him.

22 January 2019

And just a month ago, on 22 January 2019, a 49 year old Singaporean male not only drove his car in the motorcycle lane, but crashed it into the passport scanning kiosk.

He reeked of alcohol when pulled from his car.
