Everything you need to know about the Underground Shopping Mall at Marine Parade Station in 60 secs

Just seeing the words “shopping mall” nowadays is enough to send many Singaporeans into either some sort of renewed euphoria (Yay, another mall to explore!) or exasperated fits (What? Another mall?). But before you start deciding whether you will or will not visit this upcoming underground mall, perhaps you should read on to see what it will have in store for all of us.

Location of the mall
With Marine Parade station slated for completion in 2023, this underground retail space will sit above part of the tunnel connecting the Marine Parade and Marine Terrace stations. Although such concepts are not new, what with Raffles Place, Dhoby Ghaut and Bugis stations already in on it for some time now, this upcoming Marine Parade shopping mall will be the first to be introduced in a fairly big way outside the city.

Type of businesses
But what about the neighbouring above ground shopping malls like Parkway Parade? Won’t their business be affected by this new construction? Fret not. The retail spaces at this new underground retail space are likely to provide services that cater more to the convenience of MRT travellers such as some F&B outlets and takeaway stores, convenience stores, perhaps foot reflexology, nail bars and maybe a wellness centre.

Size of the underground mall
In terms of scale, this retail space will definitely be much smaller than the likes of Parkway Parade and One KM mall. At just about 12,370 square metres (133,000 sq ft), on a single floor, this space is also seen as a way of getting more mileage from public infrastructure investment and optimising land productivity.

Of course, this place will make so much more sense for those who have to pass through it to go to work or home daily. You can literally look forward to being able to get some of your necessities before, during and after work so much easily once the place is officially open for business!

What you can expect from the mall
Not much else has been revealed about the construction but one thing is sure. Those living and working in the area can expect more dining and possibly retail options in just about 7 years. And with the heat wave being so drastic recently (and possibly going to get worse in the years to come), it will be a cool reprieve for workers during lunchtime and for those who are constantly required to move around the area in the daytime.

So if you happen to find yourself around Marine Parade in 2023 and wish to grab a quick meal or drink before running off to catch your train in the shortest time possible, you know where you can go. Marine Parade is just going to get more bustling in the future!
