On 14 October, we received news of the suicide of Sulli.
Despite Sulli being a veteran with 15 years of experience, she was only 25 years old.
To those who were exposed to the star, she was an outspoken star and a symbol of changing times in Korea. Lest you do not know, the K-pop industry is a brutal one that often seem to put idols as less than humans.
The cost of being being her authentic self under the scrutiny of everybody and everything had caused her to be one of the most unfairly hated woman in the K-pop industry.
All because she had something called an opinion.
Started At The Age Of 10
Sulli, or Choi Jin-Ri, was born on 29 Mar 1994, in Busan, Korea. She started off her career as a young princess in the SBS drama Ballad of Seodong in 2005.
She also took on minor roles in dramas and movies such as Vacation (2006), Punch Lady (2007), The Flower Girl is Here (2007) and BABO (2008).
Later on, she passed an audition with SM Entertainment, and was accepted as a trainee that would then lead into what she was known for:
Youngest Member Of Girl Group f(x)
In f(x)’s debut in 2009, Sulli was known for her tall height and cute, bright smile.
f(x)’s was known for their electropop and experimental singles, which were unusual for K-pop’s songs.
Sulli also went on to as the lead role in To The Beautiful You in Aug 2012, which later won her the Best New Star award at the SBS Drama Awards that year.
She played a supporting role in period adventure The Pirates (2014) as well, then the leading role in comedy Fashion King (2014), and another leading role in Real (2017).
2014, Took A Break From f(x) And Then Withdrawal
Despite promotions of the group’s Red Light album, Sulli suddenly went into hiatus giving reasons of being mentally and physically worn down from the constant comments and rumours on her. This was official on 24 July 2014, and Sulli would officially withdraw from the group on Aug 2015 to focus on acting.
In 2019, she debuted as a solo artist with song and album Goblin.
Comments And Rumours, Mental Health
You might be wondering what kind of issues a successful person might be facing, so I remind you that this was a person who started off at 10 years old being under the unkind eyes of the entertainment industry.
Internet haters, K-pop harsh training, expectations to succeed.
The sad truth is, despite searching around, I cannot find anything controversial enough to be worthy of death.
Here’s the things that got her haters triggered:
- Weight
- Lazy performances on stage with f(x)
- Leaving f(x)
- Dating an older man
- Not wearing a bra because shes feels uncomfortable with them on
- Posting photographs of her and her friends partying
- Identifying as a feminist
- Getting slammed for voicing her opinions on abortion
There are countless other things that netizens have slammed her for, and I strongly suggest that if you do want to retain your faith in humanity to not search for them.
She was the subject of unprecedented levels of hate that can only be explained by the lack of human empathy and extreme bigotry.
All these really seem to affect her individualy, and she revealed that she had panic disorders and sociophobia.
She was also struggling with depression. In 2018, she had live-streamed herself crying on Instagram, though this wasn’t the only time she seemed depressed on Instagram.
My faith in humanity dipped a little today.
