If there’s one thing to know in this world, it’s that there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

(Or dinner.)

Even when it looks like it could be free.

And it seems like a Facebook user named Izah Letriynaa recently learned that the hard way after having crabs at a store at the tze char stall at 89.7 Supper Club.

According to her, she ordered one crab but received three and was shocked when she was told that she would have to pay for all three crabs.

On the other hand, the stall seems to have a different version of the story.

Here’s what she has to say and what the stall has to say as well.

Asked for a Small-Sized Portion of Crab, But Was Told That Only Medium-Sized Portions Are Available

In her Facebook post, Izah, 31, explained that she and her family had gone down to 89.7 Supper Club at Changi Village on Wednesday (22 February) night.

When she was ordering her meal, she had initially asked the stall’s staff about the price of a small portion of chilli crab.

However, she was told that the stall no longer serves small portions and only serves medium-sized portions of chilli crab that cost $38 each now.

In her post, she added that she is the only person in her family who eats crabs and that she does not like to waste food, so she decided to order just one crab even after the waiter recommended that she should get two.

She also said that she would order more if she wanted more crab afterwards.

However, when the food came, she noticed that the portion of crab serviced was huge and told the waiter, “Brother… This one[,] you say [one] person eat??? It’s a lot[;] I cannot even finish.”

Upon hearing that, the waiter walked away.

After five to eight minutes, the waiter returned and confirmed that the chef had accidentally cooked three crabs in her order instead of one.

Izah then asked if it was her “fault”, and the waiter reassured her that it wasn’t and that she could pack the remaining crab to take home.

However, Izah declined and said that no one else would eat the crab in her home. She even asked if the waiter wanted to have it, and he “politely declined”, according to her.

At this point, the waiter did not bring up anything about extra charges being incurred.

But Waiter Asked Her to Pay $110 Afterwards

But the waiter soon returned and told her that he would have to charge her $110 for all three crabs as the crabs had already been served.

She then said, “First of all, it’s not my fault that you guys gave me [three crabs]. Secondly, I’m not going to pay for that $80 [because] I don’t want to bring [it] back [because] its a wastage as nobody is going to eat. It’s not about the money[;] it’s about who wants to eat [it]?!”

Izah then claimed that the waiter told her that she should have told him once she saw that there were three crabs on her plate.

“You were standing beside me when the food came[,] you can stop me right there and then but you didn’t. How is it my fault now[?] I tell you what, you go and give the chef [these two] crab[s.] I will only eat what I ordered,” she told the waiter.

Ended Up Taking the Whole Plate of Crabs From Her Table

According to her, the waiter ended up walking back and forth between her and the chef five to six times and told her once to continue eating and told her afterwards that the stall would offer her a discounted price for the crabs.

In the end, the waiter took the entire plate of crabs from her table.

She added that she refused to pay the full $110 as it was not her fault that the chef made the wrong order.

Chef Refused to Come Out to Meet Customers; They Ended Up Dabao-ing the Rest of Their Dinner

Additionally, Izah claimed that the chef did not come out of the kitchen despite her requests to see him and resolve the issue.

Apart from that, the waiter also questioned why she didn’t know that there were three crabs since she had already eaten three crab legs.

To that, she responded, “Who counts how many crab legs [there are] before eating????? How does it matter how many crab legs [there are]… I ordered [one,] you served [three]. This [has] got nothing to do with me. So now, where is my crab?”

The waiter then allegedly told her, “Your crab finish already because you have eaten, only left with gravy.

Ultimately, Izah and her husband decided to just pack the rest of their order to-go and paid for one crab as her mood for family night was ruined.

“Family night turned out to be so crappy. Crappy service recovery! Full of CRAB service!” she wrote.

She also said that she chose not to make a scene as other patrons were nearby and watching the scene unfold.

Apart from that, she was concerned that her outburst would get posted on social media.

“If the service was there, out of goodwill[,] I might have even considered paying for the additional [crab],” she concluded.

She also mentioned that the stall made it seem like it was her fault and pointed out that the staff taking her plate away when she was eating was poor service.

Netizens’ Response

After posting about her experience on Facebook, her post garnered the attention of various netizens.

Some called the stall out and noted that Izah should not have been asked to pay for the food as it was the chef’s mistake, while others said that Izah should have returned the dish once she realised that it seemed “odd”.

There were also netizens who recounted their own experiences and said that 89.7 Supper Club’s stalls have poor service.

Based on the comments, Izah also revealed that other people have also “fallen” to this “scam tactic”.

Store’s Response: Customer Apparently Ate More Than Half of the Dish

After the incident, 89.7 Supper Club took to Facebook to issue a statement as well.

After apologising for the inconvenience caused, the stall said, “However, we sincerely seek your understanding in approaching any of our service [staff] should there be any discrepancies in your orders. Failure to do so implied that you have already accepted the orders and their respective prices.”

The stall then revealed that, unlike Izah’s version of the story, Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage was checked and that the service staff did not stand next to Izah when the food was served.

“Furthermore, it is common knowledge to differentiate between 1 and 3 crabs based on the number of shells. When the plate of 3 crabs came, why didn’t you approach our staff to correct it? And you proceed on to consume the food,” the stall added.

The stall also claimed that the manager offered Izah a promotional price of $80 for three crabs, but she insisted on paying for only one crab when she had finished “more than half” of the plate of crabs.

“We are very disappointed that you made it viral online as we charged you for one piece of crab when you almost finished the dish,” the stall commented.

Those who left comments on the stall’s Facebook post were also largely supportive of the stall.

The manager also told Shin Min Daily News that the chef misread the customer’s order and thought that she ordered three crabs and offered her an $80-for-three discount, but was firmly rejected by Izah.

She admitted that the stall’s staff was at fault but revealed that she ate three out of six pieces of crab that the three crabs were cut up into, meaning that she ate half of the crabs that were on the plate.

After Izah refused to pay, the stall had to throw the rest of the crabs away.

The manager also claimed that Izah did not alert the service staff immediately after noticing that there was a discrepancy in her order and said that the stall would definitely switch out her order and give her the correct one if she had informed the staff right after she received the wrong order.
