Facebook Removes Another Pro-PAP Page for Violating Its Policies

Facebook, the social media site and creation of an alien posing as a human, is desperate to make amends.

The Californian company faced criticism after it was allegedly used by the Russians to interfere in the 2016 United States presidential election.

Now, in an effort to present users with the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, the social media site has imposed new measures such as deleting posts that spread misinformation and labelling pages controlled by the government.

And it’s not just American voters that Facebook cares about. They care about us Singaporeans too, it seems.

Facebook Removes Another Pro-PAP Page for Violating Its Policies

If you use Facebook, you’ve probably come across or heard of the page Fabrications About The PAP.

Fabrications About The PAP is a Singapore’s variant of Fox News – it’s a pro-PAP page that was reportedly set up in response to “anti-government” websites.

Started by Jason Chua Chin Seng in 2011, the page has been perceived as being overly critical of opposition parties and effusive in its praise for the ruling party.

But now, it’s no longer accessible.

Facebook announced that they’ve taken down the page for violating its policies, after removing a similar page recently, reported The Straits Times.

A spokesman said that this was part of their efforts to deal with problematic accounts.

“We’ve taken action on accounts in Singapore for violating our policies. This is based on the violating behaviour of these accounts and not based on the content posted from these pages,” he said.

You would have noticed that the headline included the word “another”, indicating that there’s another page with partisan political interests.

But it’s actually the same page. Either that or another page just happened to have the same exact name and political agenda.

In late June, Facebook removed another Fabrications About the PAP page for the same reason, disappointing the 250,000 people who liked the page.

It is unknown if Chua set up the second version of the page as well.

Has Removed Other Accounts in Singapore Too

As part of their efforts to protect the integrity of the upcoming General Election, Facebook has been conducting checks on its accounts in Singapore to ensure it removes accounts that impersonate candidates and elected officials.

On 11 Jun, the social media giant said it had taken action against several accounts for misrepresentation and “inauthentic behaviour” on its platform.

If Facebook suspects that an account is fake or misleading, it will either remove the account or ask for more information to verify its authenticity.

And if a certain page owner repeatedly flouts Facebook’s policies, it could be banned from the platform.

Yes, gone are the days when you could say anything you wanted on social media. Now, your words have consequences.
