Minister of State “Disturbed” By Israel’s Actions; Urges S’poreans Who Wish to Donate to Palestinians to Turn to Local Fundraising Drives

Though Israel and Hamas militants have entered a ceasefire, the effects of the raging war still linger and affect Palestinians on a day to day basis.

The Singapore Government welcomed the ceasefire and has made a donation of US$100,000 to the Singapore Red Cross to help the organisation launch its appeal for donations in support of relief efforts in the region.

In addition, the Minister of State for Home Affairs encouraged Singaporeans who are keen to help victims of the recent violence to contribute through the Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation (RLAF) and the Singapore Red Cross.

In his Facebook post on Monday (24 May), the minister, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, explained how members of the public could help those affected in the Gaza Strip.

While heartened by Singaporeans’ “human spirit and deep sense of compassion”, he urged Singaporeans to be aware of the dangers of making donations to unverified overseas groups, not knowing “where the money goes, or how it is used.”

Associate Professor Faishal advised Singaporeans to instead offer their help to the two legitimate organisations. He also highlighted that the RLAF is working with the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine and together, they have raised over $1.8 million so far.

The Straits Times also reports that the RLAF has launched its fund-raising drive last Saturday to provide aid in the form of health, relief and social services.

Even the biggest King of the pandemic, Sheng Shiong, has donated S$S200,000 to RLAF CEO Muhammad Faizal Othman.

If you’ve already forgotten, Sheng Siong gave bonuses to its employees for their hard work during the height of the pandemic last year. Guess they’re expanding their generosity outside of Singapore too.

The chief executive of the supermarket chain, Mr Lim Hock Chee, said, ”Sheng Siong has always strived to help the community. So, this sum of money is a way for us to give back and help the people in Palestine.”

“Disproportionate” Force Used On Palestinians

In Minister Faishal’s post, he emphasised that he was “disturbed” by Israel’s actions, using an unprecedented amount of force and violence against the Palestinians during a holy period for Muslims, no less.

Though he acknowledged that “there have been attacks on Israelis, rockets sent into Israel, and [that] Hamas has tried to provoke the Israelis,” he and many others have found their actions to be excessively vicious.

“Looking at media reports, Israel appears to have used disproportionate force and violence, against the Palestinian people… the manner in which the arguments first started, and the way in which Israel has used disproportionate force against innocent people, including children.

“It’s unacceptable, and very tragic,” he wrote.
