Normally, if you were to go to a private dental practice, one of the most annoying things to deal with are them trying to get you to remove your wisdom tooth just in case.

Well, if you thought that was the worst, think again.

Dentist Jailed After Making Fake MediSave Claims for Dental Procedures He Didn’t Perform

John Sun, previously known as Sng Wee Hock, had cheated money off the Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board by creating non-existent operations for his customers.

In April 2023, the 50-year-old dentist was convicted of 14 charges of cheating and forgery.

For seven of the charges, he had made false claims to the CPF Board, leading to them disbursing S$11,750 to him.

When the Ministry of Health (MOH) conducted an audit on his practice and requested documents for verification, Sun forged and submitted seven photos of x-rays.

This took place back in 2014 when Sun was the director and practising dentist for WH Dental & Associates.

On 28 August 2023, Sun was sentenced to three years and one months’ jail for his crimes.

An Expert or a Cheater

According to the deputy public prosecutors, Sun had made false claims for FBR (foreign body removal) and ABG (autogenous bone graft).

It is reportedly rare for a dentist to perform FBR.

“There is no plausible explanation as to why the accused had to perform so many of this extremely rare procedure.”

Patients affected in the false claims wanted implants, which they had received. However, they did not request or receive any FBR or APG procedures.

In addition, they did not go through the preparatory work required for these two procedures either.

A Repeat Offender

This isn’t Sun’s first brush with the law.

And apparently, his previous actions were pretty terrifying.

Back in 2016, Sun was caught giving dental work to unqualified employees. He was fined S$40,000 and suspended 15 months for his offence.

In 2017, Sun was caught not supervising two foreign-trained dentists under his charge for months. This resulted in another S$50,000 fine and a 15-month suspension.

In 2019, Sun was fined S$10,000 and suspended for four months. He had allowed an oral health therapist to fit braces on a boy.

That same year, he was fined another S$8,000 for not keeping proper notes.

Maybe that dentist who keeps wanting to remove your wisdom tooth may be a tad bit better.

After all, at least that dentist is trained and would be working on it personally (hopefully).
