NEA Says Image of Closed Cemetery With ‘Beware of Ghost’ is Fake

Cemeteries are meant for the dead.

And so, it’s hardly surprising why they would be affiliated with beings from the netherworld.

But here’s the thing; despite their perceived connections to rather demonic beings…

It’s still not common that you see a cemetery actually warning you of such things.

‘Beware of Ghost’

Usually, cemeteries tend to warn visitors of a specific set of hazards:

  • Falling trees
  • Slippery ground
  • Snakes
  • Uneven ground

You know, the routine works.

But this particular closed cemetery we’re about to talk about seemed to be a little… different.

Yes folks. It’s exactly as you see.

The sign warns of a long-haired woman in a white dress, the likes of which are normally seen on TV and in horror movies.

In essence?

It’s asking you to beware of ghosts, or pontianaks.

Smelled a rat with that one?

You’re not wrong.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) has since clarified that the photo was, in fact, a doctored one.

The actual sign actually looks like this:

Which means that no, the cemetery wasn’t asking you to beware of The Ring.

It was, in fact, asking you to beware of The Ground.

Though of course, a case can be made that the ghost could just as easily pull you into the ground.

But that’s for another time.

No Sense Of Humour

Some Netizens have since called NEA out for supposedly lacking a ‘sense of humour’ in regards to the matter, and others theorised that the modified sign would probably have been more effective in deterring unwelcome visitors.

If anything else, the modified sign has certainly proved ‘entertaining’ enough.

The modified sign, for that matter, would certainly be perfect for an infamous cemetery located in Siglap, Singapore.

Lest you’re unaware, Siglap has a rather creepy history.

It is, after all, the land where the Kubur Kassim cemetery is situated.

Apart from serving as the burial grounds for Muslims who used to reside in the area, the 90-year-old cemetery also sports grave plots that are reportedly dedicated to the ‘Orang Bunian’ – supernatural human-like entities from Malay folklore.

Interestingly, it inspired the Malay classic movie, Pontianak, as well. Apparently, there have been previous sightings of the long-haired entities in the area.
