If you haven’t been following the news, here’s a little background info:
An 18-month-old girl died at Urban Revivo in Jewel Changi Airport after a few other children accidentally knocked over a standalone full-length mirror while playing. The little girl happened to be standing right in front of the mirror when the incident happened.
She was unconscious when taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, she passed away at the hospital. Her body was cremated in Singapore on Sunday, 25 August 2019.
The child’s mother and family then went to the store at around 6:00 a.m. to say their prayers.
Family Hires Lawyer
A lawyer was engaged by the family, though the family has since gone home to China.
The lawyer may be able to pursue a civil case after police investigations reveal the facts and determine if the incident was an accident or if anyone is at fault.
The courts will determine the liability and damages in the event that a civil case is pursued.
So far, the police have classified the incident as an unnatural death and are still investigating.
Previously
For mirrors that stand by themselves, they’re, according to the words of a coroner in England, an “accident waiting to happen.”
Back in 2013, a four-year-old boy was crushed to death in a Hugo Boss outlet when he moved the wings of a three-piece standing mirror. The mirror, which weighed a whopping 118 kg, fell on him after it wobbled.
Hugo Boss was then fined more than SGD$2 million for the incident.
So whether this will be a similar case, or not, depends on what the investigations reveal.
Other Free Standing Mirrors Removed
There were other free-standing mirrors in the fashion store, which have all been removed. The mirrors were full-length mirrors and were supported from the back by a frame.
Urban Revivo is a Chinese fashion clothing store that opened its first outlet in 2006. It has 200 stores in countries like China, Europe and Japan.
It currently has 3 outlets in Singapore, at Jewel Changi Airport, Plaza Singapura and Raffles City.
