Even if you’re not a gamer, you’ve probably heard of MapleStory.
Developed in South Korea, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game became popular in the early 2000s with gamers of all ages.
Even though games are much more advanced and intricate these days, many avid MapleStory players miss the RPG they used to rush home from school for.
Well, what if I told you that MapleStory has been revamped for 2020?
And no, I’m not talking about the mobile game version.
I’m talking about the one that uncles and aunties used to play.
Fan Remakes MapleStory with 3D Engine & Massive Graphic Upgrade & It’s Playable
One MapleStory fan has fulfilled the dreams of former players around the world by remaking the game with a 3D engine and a massive graphic upgrade.
How?
The fan used Unreal Engine 4, a video game development software developed by Epic Games – the company behind Fortnite
According to Mashable, the software is used for graphic-intensive games like Star Wars Jedi: The Fallen Order, Street Fighter V, and Kingdom Hearts 3.
It’s free for everyone to use – if you know how to use, that is.
And even though he was working all alone to revamp it, he managed to make the old MapleStory look like a scene out of a newly-released 3D game by remaking the magical town Ellinia.
Woah.
No Monsters or Other Characters
As Mashable said, one of the joys of MapleStory was interacting with fellow players all over Southeast Asia. Many communities were formed within the game’s virtual world.
Unfortunately, that won’t be possible in this remade game.
You can explore the map, but there are no monsters to fight or characters to interact with.
Think of it as the Coronavirus Edition of MapleStory. Everyone’s alone because of social distancing, even animated monsters in video games.
Everything else is the same, however. You can explore your environment like you would in the 2D version.

This means that the jumping puzzle – where players have to jump on floating platforms to get to the top – will be included in the map.
Unlike the 2D version where you’re rewarded with loot, this 3D version rewards you with the double jump feature, which is locked at the beginning of the game.
Recreated Another Map
The developer, RYU Russell, also remade another map called Temple of Time, where players navigate a temple in the clouds.
Both maps took him a month each to build, which is not surprising given the level of detail in the game.
Netizen Reaction
Netizens were certainly impressed, with some even offering to pay a fee if a full game were made.
With the coronavirus keeping us in our homes, there’s no better time to take a trip down nostalgia lane.
Gamers can download the Ellinia map here and the Temple of Time map here.
Have fun!
