Singaporean Actress Fang Rong Steps Away from Acting After 22 Years to Pursue Mental Health Work

Mediacorp actress Fang Rong announced her departure from the acting industry on Friday, 5 Sep 2025, after 22 years in showbiz. The 29-year-old My One And Only star shared the news on her Instagram, revealing that the decision had been “many years in the making”.

“With a heart full of gratitude, I’m announcing my departure from the acting world, for now,” Fang Rong wrote in her social media statement. She explained that despite her love for acting, she felt she was missing “something deeper”.

“In a world full of pain, my heart yearned to be part of the relief,” she wrote. “I hoped to make a difference in this world in a way that is both personal and tangible.”

From Child Actress to Television Star

Fang Rong began her entertainment career at the remarkably young age of four when she appeared in an advertisement. She described the filming set as her “playground, with different toys like the cameras and booms and stuff” during a 2023 Yahoo interview.

By age seven, she had officially entered showbiz as a child actress. Her early television appearances included drama series such as Parental Guidance and The Greatest Love Of All.

The actress appeared in various Channel 5 and Channel 8 dramas throughout her career, including My Sassy Neighbour, Dear Neighbours, Fried Rice Paradise, My Guardian Angels, and In Safe Hands. She also starred in films like 2017’s Wonder Boy.

Fang Rong received recognition for her work when she won the title of “Best Rising Star” at the Busan Film Festival in 2019. More recently, she appeared as Qing Ling in the 2023 period drama Last Madame: Sisters of the Night.

Her announcement comes just before the premiere of Fixing Fate, which marks her first lead role in a full-length Mandarin series.

Psychology Background Drives New Mental Health Mission

Fang Rong graduated from the University at Buffalo with a degree in psychology in 2018. She now plans to use this educational background to serve those in need.

“Acting has always been about empathy and genuine connection, and that is a part of me that will never change,” she wrote. “It has simply taken on a new form, and I’m so excited for this journey to unfold.”

The actress intends to “channel her empathy and nurturing soul more meaningfully into service” and will transform her social media platforms into spaces where she shares content about mental health, mindfulness, and faith.

Fang Rong expressed no regrets about growing up as a child actress in the industry. She stated she feels “thankful for all the kind souls along the way who saw me and affirmed my potential”.

Fellow industry professionals have shown strong support for her decision. Priscelia Chan commented: “You are gonna shine even brighter when you have found your core essence! So happy for you that you found that joy!”
