Are you a fan of the popular American television sitcom series FRIENDS? Do you feel like you can relate to Joey’s eating habits or Phoebe’s quirkiness? Or have you been siding on either side of Rachel and Ross when they were fighting over whether they were or were not on a break?
Good news to all FRIENDS fans! Central Perk SG is opening in Singapore! You can finally lounge on the iconic orange couch while ordering coffee with your friends.
Though we won’t be able to casually talk the afternoon away with the company of the FRIENDS cast, the cafe is said to be decorated with items that are FRIENDS related.
First launched on a crowdfunding platform as the founders tried to gauge how much Singaporeans would love the idea, the response shocked the team and hence, they proceeded to start the business to bring the dreams of all FRIENDS fans to come true.
Said to be ready for operations in March of 2017, the cafe may open earlier due to the immense support from many investors, supporters and potential business partners who are keen on bringing the well-loved cafe to life.
Requiring all the help that they can get, the team welcome everyone and anyone to support them on their crowdfunding platform with choices like a cup of coffee, a 1-week drink pass, T-shirts and even a lifetime membership!
The founders are hoping to gather a total amount of SGD $51,000 to help build up the shop with the additional capital of SGD $500,000 raised by the founders themselves.
Main founder, Mr Lim Jit Min, a die-hard fan of FRIENDS is proud to say that he has re-watched the series a total of 10 times and visited the themed cafe in Shanghai every time he went to the country.
Overcome with a surge of inspiration each time he went to the cafe, he finally put his dream into plans when he approached 6 friends and pitched the idea.
Their plans went forward and he registered the company with the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) confirming the start of the cafe.
Mentioning that he is able to connect to FRIENDS on a really deep level, he often watched the series whenever he’s feeling down and it’ll always cheer him up.
Proud that the business is coming true, he thinks back to his past and said that he has always wanted a place to hang out and to recreate the experience. Though the show ended in 2004 after a 10 year run from 1994, he believed that the show is a classic and the way it appeals to the audience will never die.
From location to decoration, many questions that have been asked included the food that will be sold. He mentioned that it’s all in the plans and he has created a menu that will surely be well-liked by the consumers although it still remains a mystery for now.
A FRIENDS fan myself, I’m sure I can say for all fans in Singapore that we really can’t wait for March 2017 to go grab ourselves a cup of coffee!
