#FastFoodFriday: Domino’s New Salted Egg Yolk Pizza Review: Good Pizza But Without Much Salted Egg Yolk Taste

With the salted-egg-everything trend, I’m 101% sure that nowadays, the elderly would be strolling around neighbourhoods and saying, “现在的人很可怜啊,怎么都吃咸蛋。”

(Translation: “People nowadays seems so poor thing, having to have salted egg for everything.”)

We’ve got salted egg bubble tea, salted egg bread, salted egg fries (not you, McDonald’s) and I reckon that in the next few months, we’d be seeing salted egg yolk Coke.

So I’m guessing you must be wondering: Why are we writing a review about a salted egg yolk pizza? That’s so yesterday.

But hold your horses, because while salted egg yolk pizza came out in 1819, this latest concoction by Domino’s was only released last week.

And since it’s Friday, it’s only apt for us to review this for #FastFoodFriday despite the fact that we’re just as jaded as you when it comes to salted egg yolk.

But who knows? This might just be the food that makes salted egg yolk great again.

Let’s find out.

HOSEY Pizza

Last week, Domino’s Pizza posted this in their Facebook Page:

If the image isn’t clear enough, here’s what HO-SEY means: HO means nothing except that it’s the surname of one of my friends, and SEY means Salted Egg Yolk.

In this world, there are some ideas that a person would think they’re ingenious while another thinks they’re stupid. This is one of them.

Anyways.

The “salted egg yolk goodies” (not related to Goody Feed in any way) comprise two types of pizzas: the HOSEY Classy Pizza, which, according to Domino’s, is a “pizza with succulent smoked chicken breast, fresh onions, mushrooms and 100% Mozzarella cheese, complete with the new special salted egg sprinkle on a chilli cheese with Classic Hand-tossed crust.”

The other is the HOSEY Chicky Pizza, which is an “irresistible taste of salted egg on succulent smoked chicken breast, chicken ham, 100% Mozzarella cheese, green and red pepper on chilli cheese with Classic Hand-Tossed crust.”

To put it simply, one’s got chicken ham while one’s got mushroom. And of course both’ve got salted egg yolk.

Because I was using my boss’ credit card I was hungry, I decided to order both instead.

First Look

A wise man once said, “In 2019, looks are more important than taste.”

I can’t agree more; if not, why would unicorn everything win cai-png everything?

Fortunately for Domino’s, it looks pretty lit though I’ve got to admit that it’s quite hard to get a pizza’s look wrong.

Neat?

Neat.

Now comes the part that everyone’s waiting for: how does it taste?

Taste

Before anything, here’s a disclaimer: unlike my colleagues who swear by certain pizza brands, I’ve no preference; in fact, even the ones in bakery would get my stamp of approval as long as it’s edible.

So I’ve nothing for, or against, this red and blue pizza chain.

One thing’s for sure: when we open up the box, we can’t smell anything close to salted egg yolk. The usual pizza smell is overwhelming, and if you were just to look at it, you’d think that it’s yet another chicken pizza.

But does it taste like one?

Well, yes and no.

Yes because you can somehow feel the subtle taste of salted egg yolk, though it feels more like usual eggs. It’s so subtle, you might have to use a bit of imagination before you can discern that it’s salted egg yolk you’ve having.

And no because it’s so weak, you’d wonder if it’s just the cheese, or a salted-egg-flavoured cheese you’re having. It seems like the cheese has overpowered the salted egg yolk taste, regulating it to an aftertaste instead.

However.

Despite the weak salted egg yolk connection, the pizzas generally have a savoury touch that’ll make you want to have more. In fact, a few hours after I’ve had it, I’m still itching for one more.

Would I recommend this? If you treat it as a new pizza flavour and not salted egg yolk pizza, then yes, it’s worth the calories.

If you’re ordering because your first name is salted and your last name is egg yolk, then no; you’d be better off having salted egg yolk rice from your neighbourhood zi char stall.
