#FastFoodFriday: KFC Sour Cream & Onion Chicken, Bolognese Fries: It’s Exactly What It Sounds Like

Nearly 20 years ago, in a certain playground between a couple of kids.

Me: You know… Fried chicken’s so good.

Bob: Oh yeah. Fried chicken’s da bomb. I can eat it all day errday.

Me: Why are you speaking… weird? Do kids even speak like that?

Bob: Well, I don’t know. Maybe because this didn’t really happen 20 years ago and this is all just a figment of your imagination.

Me: Oh 🙁 Anyway, I have a secret I need to tell you. Promise you’ll never tell anyone.

Bob: I’ll pinky swear for it. The brotherhood will die with your secret.

Me: This is the fried chicken that will change the world. It’s a terrifying combination, but hear me out. You combine… Sour Cream & Onion Chips… AND MAKE THEM THE CRUST OF FRIED CHICKEN.

Bob: You… You’re not suggesting… The ultimate flavour of Sour Cream & Onion Chips… WITH FRIED CHICKEN?! But that would be impossible! The forbidden snacks! Mama said I could only eat one of them once or I’ll be fat! To combine them is… It’s too dangerous for mankind!

Fast forward 20 years.

I still have no idea whether Bob was a long lost friend, or just my imaginary friend. The impossible Sour Cream & Onion Chicken dream didn’t come to fruition in the end. But the image of Sour Cream & Onion Chicken was never lost in my mind.

And then, a couple days ago, KFC revealed the Sour Cream & Onion Chicken and Bolognese Fries.

It’s Fast Food Friday.

And you know what that means.

Is this…? Bob, is this your creation? Do you work at KFC now?

Just look at the beautiful crust.

JUST LOOK AT IT.

Or praise image manipulation. That also works.

Taste Test: Sour Cream & Onion Chicken

It was the dreams of all 10 years old who ate both at different points! Sour Cream & Onion Chips. WITH. FRIED. CHICKEN.

Doesn’t matter the fact that we as kids were too dumb to realise that we can just learn to fry chicken instead of waiting for someone to sell it!

Doesn’t matter the fact that we as kids were too dumb to just eat a bite of fried chicken, then throw a mouthful of chips inside our mouth!

This is a 20-year long dream in the making.

And… It tastes exactly as it sounds like.

It tastes like Sour Cream & Onion Chips. And then some chicken meat.

I have to say:

I’m not really sure what I expected.

There’s really not too much to say, because it tastes too much like taking a bite of sour cream & onion chips, then chucking a piece of fried chicken meat in your mouth. The seasoning of the sour cream & onion is pretty strong and takes over whatever spice the chicken had.

In the name of science for finally knowing what this tastes like, I have to say that this is a 5/5 execution. 10 year old me and Bob would probably go apeshit eating this.

But this is just about 10 to 20 years too late… and it falls flat of what adult me expects of Sour Cream & Onion fried chicken. Simple fried chicken with a sour cream & onion dipping would have been better.

Considering the price, it ain’t too bad for a taste.

Rating: 3/5

Shoutout to the peeps who ate rice with potato chips. I think you’ll give this a 5/5.

Taste Test: Bolognese Fries

And it’s possibly another childhood favourite made more sinful here: what if pasta in bolognese was replaced with fries?

Oh yeah hmmm look at the sauce being poured.

The sauce tastes like your kopitiam or homecooked bolognese that seems to be lacking a little something to be great, but just sweet enough that this became one of Bob’s favourite go-tos.

Just like the chicken, this didn’t taste anything out of expectations. Dip fries in that, and you get what you see. It’s like an alright chilli fries (American chilli fries definition, so meat sauce on top of fries).

One problem – there’s very little sauce for the price. This also isn’t available for trade-in, so you’ll have to add on or buy it ala carte at S$4.95. Which is relatively expensive.

Rating: 3.5/5

To the peeps who complain that Bolognese Pasta isn’t crispy: this might be your thing.

Bob… are these two your creations?

Wait a minute… Bob… SpongeBOB…

No, this is Patrick. / Image: Giphy

I guess Bob was really just my imaginary friend.
