SBS Bus Driver Dies After Bus Reportedly Skidded, Crashing Into Multiple Structures

A 58-year-old SBS Transit bus driver died from a fatal accident on Thursday night, 21 November 2024.

The incident occurred at around 11 PM at the junction of Kaki Bukit Avenue 2 and Kaki Bukit Road 1, when the bus reportedly lost control and skidded.

The bus, operating on the Service 137 route, crashed into multiple structures, including a lamppost, a traffic light, and a large tree. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the bus’s windshield shattered and its front end severely damaged.

A 30-year-old auto repair shop owner working nearby recounted hearing a loud crash. He said to Shin Min Daily News, “We ran out and saw the bus had mounted the grass patch and hit a tree,” she said. “Some passengers were still inside. My colleagues immediately called the police.”

The injured bus driver was rushed to Changi General Hospital unconscious but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Five male passengers, aged between 26 and 38, were also taken to the hospital. They were reported to be conscious at the time.

SBS Transit expressed deep sorrow over the death of their employee. Spokesperson Grace Wu said to CNA, “We are deeply saddened by his passing as he was a very good and helpful bus captain. We have extended our deepest condolences to his family and are providing them with our fullest support and assistance during this very difficult time.”

The company also assured the public that the well-being of the injured passengers was a priority. “Our team has been at the hospital to provide care and assistance to the passengers,” she said.

She wished them a swift recovery and confirmed SBS Transit was cooperating with police investigations.

Police confirmed that the bus had “self-skidded” before the collision. Investigations into the exact cause of the accident are ongoing.
