A parent can make or break a child’s future – and in this case, quite literally.
Just yesterday, a 35-year-old father was found guilty of abusing four out of his five children over a two year period, starting from February 2014.
He was convicted of stepping on his son’s hand, breaking his wrist, and holding his then five-month-old daughter upside down by her foot; among other crimes.
The children, now aged between eight months and 11 years old, were five months to nine years old at the time of the respective incidents.
Six-year-old son
A Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) child protection officer found bruises and burn marks on the six year old.
Upon telling the father she needed to take his son for a medical checkup, he threatened to commit suicide.
“If you bring him, you won’t see me any more. I won’t do it in front of your eye and I will do it behind, don’t regret. If you bring him for medical, you will see it in the news tomorrow.”
After leaving the flat and returning to find the officer still there, he threw his mobile phone at her, but missed.
He then carried the six-year-old into the kitchen, placed him on window ledge, climbed onto the ledge and sat next to his son.
On a separate occasion, he threw a lit cigarette at the boy’s face, slapped it, and kicked his stomach.
Five-month-old daughter
The father grabbed his then five-month-old daughter by one of her legs and held her upside down. He also tried to punch her after she started crying.
Nine-year-old son
The father hit his then nine-year-old eldest child on his legs and arms using a rubber hose; also slapping and punching the boy’s face.
The boy was taken to the hospital by his teacher the next day after she wiped powder off his face to find bruises and red marks on his skin.

The father stepped on his then seven-year-old son’s left hand and stomach. After being taken to the hospital by his teacher the next day, the boy was found to have a broken wrist.
His two eldest children have since been admitted into an orphanage. He is expected to be sentenced next Thursday, with the prosecution fighting for a three-year jail term.
