Lest you forget, jaywalking is still illegal in Singapore, even though it is somewhat a required skill.
As someone who is somewhat terrible at jaywalking, pedestrian crossings are the way to go. Even then, at some roads, it’s impossible to cross without jaywalking.
Anyway, it seems like in the general proficiency levels of jaywalking are steadily decreasing.
To the point where a woman basically became a ping pong ball between 2 cars for jaywalking.
Ping pong jaywalking woman
The original video is found on ROADS.sg. You can also view a YouTube mirror here:
But in case you can’t watch the video, here’s what happened.
The video is from the viewpoint of the vehicle behind the car that actually hit the woman.
It’s a 3-lane road, and the camera is on the rightmost lane. At the start of the video, we can see a small figure with a white shirt and carrying something near a bus stop trying to cross the road.
As cars slowly stop, you can see the figure in between the middle and rightmost lane, on the yellow line.
Watching the video several times, I don’t think the black car in front of the camera noticed the woman crossing from the left at all. I mean, who would?
As the woman crossed the yellow line to go into the black car’s lane, she dashed slightly faster. The black car braked, but it is still not in time for the black car to stop completely.
She then got hit and then ricochet to the silver car on the middle lane.
Obviously, the black car’s driver then comes out, probably baffled by the stupidity at work here. The silver car’s driver came out a little later too.
How to jaywalk ft. migrant worker
But here’s the best part of the video: you see the migrant worker on the right side?
As the black car owner checks what is going on in front, the migrant worker continued walking on and successfully crossed the road, not even bothering to look back once.
At this point, you might be going This writer siao ah! People get hit by a car you still bochup! No feeling!
Minor Injuries
According to the police, the woman only suffered minor injuries and declined to be taken to the hospital. This incident happened along Balestier Road on 22 July 2019, in the direction of Lavender Road at about 5.29 pm.
Also a disclaimer: we’re not actually telling people jaywalking is good. We realise that telling people to stop jaywalking is near impossible due to the nature of roads in S’pore, so here’s what we’re going to tell you instead.
When crossing green/red lights, it’s important to look left and right before crossing. You never know what happens in traffic.
When jaywalking, it’s even more important to look where traffic is coming. If you’re not sure you can make it, don’t do it. Keep looking and watching out for the traffic even if they already stopped.
Look at the example of the migrant worker. Doesn’t matter what interesting thing is happening there. None of your business when you’re surrounded by 2,000 kg beasts of steel delivering death in the form of human pancakes. Watch, watch some more and make sure you don’t become ping pong fodder.
And it goes without saying, but no mobile phones on the road.
See, even a dog knows that.
