Lest you’re somehow not aware, a preservative is a substance or chemical that is added to products to lengthen the products’ lifespan. Think of it as the “immortality” pill for food.
However, is it good for mortal beings like us? Not really, for consuming too much of it can increase one’s risk of colon cancer. That’s why here in Singapore, we control such substances and “get rid” of them if we find them unsuitable.
This time, Feng He Garden sauce and paste are in the spotlight for this very problem.
SFA Recalling Feng He Garden Sauce & Paste Products Due to Excessive Preservatives
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has issued a recall of three products from Malaysia’s Feng He Garden Pte Ltd.
The products affected were:
- Gan Xiang Paste (120g)
- Salted Egg Yolk Paste (100g)
- Moo-mite Sauce (120g)
The recall is for batches of all expiry dates. All the affected products are also from Malaysia.
SFA asked the consumers not to consume the products. They may contact their point of purchase for enquiries as well.
Why were they recalled?
Although there was no declaration of preservatives on the food packaging labels, there was still preservatives in the products. Additionally, the preservatives found in the products exceed the authorised levels of preservatives.
If you are unaware, ingredients such as food preservatives have to be declared on food packaging labels under the food regulations. Plus, only permitted food preservatives can be used in food products.
That means you cannot add your special MSG, saying that because it’s special it can’t be revealed and call it a day.
Not only do you have to declare your special MSG on the packaging, but you have to declare how much special MSG there is as well. And it should not exceed the standards set in the Singapore Food Regulations for your particular food product.
Or your product will too end up getting recalled like these products.
Other Food Recalls
Last month, SFA recalled another batch of Ceres 100% Apple Juice due to elevated levels of patulin. Earlier the same month, a batch of Ceres 100% Apple Juice was already recalled.
The food recall was extended for they found another batch of products that have elevated levels of patulin as well.
In case you’re unaware of what is patulin, it is an organic compound that can occur naturally in fruits such as apples due to fungal contamination before and after harvest.
You can read more details about that recall here.
Another product that was recalled was “Earthen Pot” brand chilli powder. An affected batch of chilli powder was found to contain aflatoxins, a family of toxins produced by certain fungi.
It can cause cancer, immunosuppression and birth defects. If you enjoy eating them in large doses, it may lead to acute poisoning and that is life-threatening.
Thus consumers were advised not to consume the affected batch.
You can see more about the recall of that product here.
