A barbecue restaurant in Geylang experienced a fire in its exhaust ventilation system, forcing 30 staff members and customers to evacuate as thick smoke billowed from the premises.
The incident happened at 7:15 PM on Saturday (12 Apr 2025) at Moustache BBQ restaurant located at Lorong 25A Geylang.
A reader alerted Shin Min Daily News about the fire, reporting heavy smoke coming from the barbecue restaurant and the arrival of police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) personnel at the scene.

Emergency Response and Containment
When reporters arrived, two fire engines and two police vehicles were at the location with the road section blocked off.
Police had cordoned off three shop fronts – two belonging to Moustache BBQ restaurant and one adjacent bar.
Observations showed SCDF personnel beginning to pack up their fire hoses around 8:00 PM, though one fire investigator remained on site to determine the cause of the fire.
At approximately 9:00 PM, police began removing the cordon tape to restore normal traffic flow.
A nearby employee, Mr. Huang (name transliterated from Mandarin), 30, said in an interview that he noticed smoke drifting into his shop through the back door, which alerted him to the fire.
“I ran out to check and discovered the exhaust duct of a nearby shop was on fire.”
He noted that some staff were attempting to extinguish the fire with small hoses, and he lent them his shop’s more powerful water hose.
“The manager also called the SCDF, who arrived within 10 minutes. By then, the fire was almost extinguished.”

Aftermath and Investigation
Mr. Liu (name transliterated from Mandarin), a 45-year-old chef from another nearby restaurant, mentioned that many onlookers gathered after the fire broke out.
“The fire was put out in about half an hour. This area has never had a fire before; this is the first time.”
Around 9:15 PM, 10 employees from another Moustache BBQ restaurant branch were seen exiting and subsequently heading to the affected restaurant to collect bottles and utensils.
The exhaust duct of the affected restaurant showed clear signs of fire damage.
When reporters attempted to question staff from the affected restaurant, they were unwilling to comment.

The SCDF confirmed when asked that the fire involved the exhaust duct in the ground-floor kitchen. Before SCDF’s arrival, staff had already used dry powder extinguishers to fight the fire.
They also confirmed that 30 staff and customers had evacuated the restaurant before SCDF arrived.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
