Usually, one would expect a rather pleasant dining experience in a hawker centre. Sure, there may be the occasional crowd, and yeah maybe there’re one or two loud-mouthed individuals around, but generally, things are pretty pleasant.
Or at least, that’s what you would usually expect.
On other occasions, however, you could expect to see an entire fire show going on while you dine-in.
And I’m not even talking about fire ramen or anything of that sort.
30 People Evacuated After Grease Fire Started in an Indian Stall in Newton Food Centre
On 7 September 2021, a fire reportedly broke out in an Indian food stall in Newton Food Center.
30 people had to self-evacuate from the premises.
In light of the event, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) had to make their way down to put out the fire, which they promptly did with water hoses.
In an eyewitness account, it was revealed that bystanders had gone over to the Indian stall to check, after smelling smoke in the air.
The owner of the Indian stall, as well as the stall owner of the tea stall beside it, then scrambled to find a fire extinguisher.
They proceeded to let it rip at the range hood.
In the process, surrounding diners hurriedly evacuated to a safe place.
Meanwhile, the SCDF promptly arrived after receiving a call for help, and they went on to extinguish the fire within five minutes.
Thankfully, nobody was injured in the accident.
Too Much Grease
And I’m not talking about the movie.
Apparently, the suspected cause of the fire was a build-up of grease around the range hood, which had triggered sparks during the cooking process.
In a nutshell, the range hood was too greasy.
As such, the SCDF advised personnel to avoid accumulating oil residues around stoves, in order to abstain from fire hazards. Also, oil should not be allowed to accumulate near the boiler and around the range hood, in order to prevent a rapid spread of fire.
Boilers should always be attended to during the cooking process as well.
Last but not least, the range hood should be cleaned and maintained at least once a year.
How Do You Extinguish A Grease Fire?
It only takes mere seconds for either hot oil or grease to “flame on”, so what can you do to extinguish an imminent grease fire?
Well, first off, don’t panick. Instead, opt from the following four methods:
- Turn off the heat source and cover with a pan lid
- Cover with a cookie sheet until the flame cools down
- Smother the flames with baking soda or salt. Make sure to drop it directly on the fire
- Use a Class K fire extinguisher
If the fire cannot be extinguished, however, you’re advised to evacuate, call the relevant helpline and stay put in order.
