Liar, liar, pants on fire.

The Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) campus experienced a fire outbreak earlier today (10 August 2023), but thankfully, the cause was no lying students.

It was a portable air-conditioner which caught fire.

Due to the fire, students and staff members were evacuated from the scene.

Here is what happened.

Fire Broke Out at Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) Campus

According to Today Online, the fire on the SIM campus occurred in the audio-visual room of SIM’s Global Education Block B building.

The cause was allegedly a portable air-conditioner which caught fire.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the fire incident at about 9.10 am and rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire.

Thankfully, no reported injuries were linked to the fire outbreak at 461 Clementi Road, where SIM is located.

Today Online visited the campus after the fire incident and saw students sitting in the lobby of Block A around 11 am.

The news outlet also reported smelling a pungent smell of smoke when they visited the campus.

Students and Staff Were in the Middle of Classes and Examinations

According to people Today Online spoke to, an evacuation announcement led to students and staff leaving the buildings in troughs.

Some of them were having classes while others were taking examinations.

For those with classes, the classes were cancelled for the rest of the day.

What a score! How many times have we imagined having classes cancelled because of an unexpected incident like a fire?

But this might be a different story for those who were in the midst of taking examinations. After all, there is no desire to add stress in a very stressful situation.

Ms Shanna Goh, who spoke to Today Online, shared that she was in the middle of her psychology module examination when the fire alarm was set off.

The 23-year-old Business Administration student was taking her exam in the Block B building.

She shared that the fire alarm went off around 9.20 am or 9.30 am. However, students and staff did not panic, and everyone appeared calm.

Well, it seems Singaporeans value education and grades quite a bit.

After the announcement that the fire alarm which went off was not a drill, the students and staff eventually left Block B to wait near the entrance of SIM.

Nobody was hurt in the incident.

We sure hope these students don’t have to retake the exams given this unexpected fiery interruption.
